In the past couple of years, reels have taken over the world like a parasite and 2023 was no different. In fact, this year, reels clutched onto people like a Victorian woman clutching onto her pearls. Doomscrolling on Instagram and trying to be in the public eye is probably what led to the growing number of viral trends on the platform. Not all that goes viral is gold, and Instagram keeps proving it time and again. So, here are some of the worst trends on Instagram that we saw in 2023.

1. Just looking like a wow

It was cute the first couple of times, but this trend soon lost its shine when it took over Instagram. It was cringy and annoying and woke up the grammar tyrant in me. It didn’t help that laddoo peela, mouse colour, and rama green became the new Pantone shades. One thing to be appreciated, though, is how Jasmeen Kaur rode the high of the trend and grew her business.

2. Moye moye

Life is all moye moye on Instagram these days. The trend started with the Serbian song Dzanum by Serbian singer-songwriter Teya Dora and is now synonymous with a sad and pitiable life. All it took was India’s loss against Australia to catapult the trend to new heights.

3. Gopi bahu’s la la la la

Gopi Bahu’s la la land is also quite pathetic if you ask me. It is supposed to sound romantic but ends up sounding quite annoying. Saath Nibhaana Saathiya has been a treasure trove of memes since the Covid lockdown starting with the ‘rasode mein kaun tha’ meme. We really do wish that in the new year, this show won’t nibhao any more of our saath.

4. Lappu sa Sachin

This trend is just as lappu as Sachin, and we really wish it wasn’t a thing in 2023. The jhingur sa ladka ruled over Instagram for a good part of the year, all thanks to his neighbour who couldn’t see what Sachin’s girlfriend saw in him. And we couldn’t see why this cringe needed to be a viral trend in 2023.

5. Ganji chudail

Who would have thought that a children’s story would turn into a meme-fest? Clearly, not the makers of Ganji Chudail. The character is based on a short animated series created by Dream Stories TV Adventure, about a bald witch who is wreaking havoc on unsuspecting villagers. It’s not even a very pretty animation and is quite jarring, but for some reason, the internet people decided it is worth going viral.

6. Elvish Bhai ka systumm

If you are not an ardent YouTube viewer, it’s likely you wouldn’t have come across Elvish bhai aka Elvish Yadav. But if you followed the second season of Bigg Boss OTT, you would surely be familiar with the man. Throughout the season of the reality show, ever since Elvish entered the Bigg Boss house, he was seen talking about his systumm. This, of course, continued outside the reality show as well. While that in itself isn’t a problem, it became the talk of the town when people decided to make misogynistic and derogatory statements against women and call it systumm, making it one of the worst trends of 2023.

7. Dil vich tere liye meme trend

Yes, we get it, memes are the way to trend these days, but the dil vich tere liye trend just wasn’t it. While the song itself is nothing to write home about, the choreography just makes it hilarious. While short bursts of this meme elicit laughter, having this all over your explore page on Instagram doesn’t bode too well. We must say, this did turn out to be one of the worst trends of 2023.

8. The Boys

Popular artist, Imagine Dragons’ song Bones got a meme makeover on the internet this year. A whole bunch of ‘boys will be boys’ situations show up with the song in the background. While some of the memes were funny, a lot of them were just digs at women.
