This Mother’s Day is like no other in our lifetimes. Some of us can’t be with our moms, even while living in the same city. And some of us (the lucky ones!) are locked down at home with our mothers. But we still can’t buy a gift for them for Mother’s Day this year. Non-essential items are not being delivered, and to give regular groceries as a gift to your mom is just wrong! So if you want to do something special for your mom, but can’t think of any Mother’s Day ideas for this year, check out the list below. Doing any one of these things for your mom will put you in her good books for a long time and will make her feel special despite the lockdown.
1. Make cute cards for her and leave them around the house. But please clean up after she’s seen them.
Remind her of the time you were a cute little child, instead of the rowdy teenager and know-it-all adult you later became. Let her relive the years when you thought your biggest achievement was drawing colourful, squiggly lines on a piece of paper. Get creative and add text she will relate to, recount personal memories you’ve shared together. This is so much better than buying a generic card from a shop which has nothing personal about it.
2. Organise a video call party with your siblings, cousins, aunts, whoever your mom actually likes
Your mom doesn’t like all your relatives, you know that. Coordinate with the ones she does like, and get them together on a video call on Mother’s Day. Sharing a few laughs with distant family members will definitely make this day memorable for her.
3. Learn how to cook so that cooking for her is not limited to Mother’s Day
Instead of restricting yourself to learning one fancy meal, learn how to cook a few regular meals. Cooking regular stuff like dal chawal, aloo gobi, and making the perfect rotis is much more valuable than one fancy lasagna.
4. Sew some interesting masks for her from old clothes
During this pandemic, one of the most important things to have is an effective mask. But that doesn’t mean you need to stick to boring colours or patterns. Pick up some old, unusable clothes, and make beautiful and unique masks for your mom. She’ll use them much more than the boring blue and white ones.
5. Find apps which she will love and download them on her phone
Most moms don’t have the time to explore their phones and all the apps available to them. Do thorough research, find the apps that you think she will love and find useful, and download them on her phone. Also, teach her how to make the most of them so that her life is easier.
6. Learn how to do the dirty jobs around the house
This means disgusting stuff life unclogging sinks and drains, washing the dustbin, and washing the most vile, dirtiest bartan. It’s absolutely gross but learn how to do it. She will thank you endlessly for it.
7. Give her a spa day at home
Arrange a nice foot spa, a one hour back and head massage, and play some relaxing music to help her rejuvenate. This also means that you don’t let anyone bother her with mummy duties all day.
8. Start a vacation fund for when this is all over
Since we’re all at home and eating home-cooked food, we’re saving some money at least. Start putting money aside for a vacation for your family for next year. Till then, you will be able to save a significant amount, and making travel plans should be possible again.
