Happy Galentine’s Day, ladies. Amidst the celebration of romantic love, take this day to celebrate your female friendships and sisterhood. So, if you are planning a chill day with your girls with a movie and some popcorn, here’s the best Galentine’s Day watchlist for you.
1. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
Finding a pair of jeans that fits well for one person is a miracle in itself, but one that fits a group of four friends, perfectly? Now that’s divine intervention. When best friends Lena, Tibby, Carmen, and Bridget find a pair of jeans that fit each of them perfectly, the girls decide to share it among themselves over the summer. With all four of them going their separate ways to spend their summer holidays, the pair of jeans travels with them and leads them all to new relationships and self-growth. There is no better movie to celebrate female friendship than The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.
2. Someone Great
One of the best ways to deal with heartbreak is to spend time with your girlfriends and that’s exactly what Jenny does. When music journalist Jenny’s boyfriend of nine years breaks up with her right before she is about to move to San Francisco for a new job, she spirals into depression. In order to spend some time with her best friends before she leaves, Jenny proposes to get together at a concert. As the girls get together for one last hurrah, they take some much-needed steps to move forward in their lives rather than being stuck in the past and find themselves becoming brave.
3. Legally Blonde
Elle Woods is the definition of a girl’s girl, making Legally Blonde a must-watch this Galentine’s Day. When her boyfriend Warner breaks up with Elle, because she isn’t smart or serious enough to be a lawyer’s wife, Elle takes it upon herself to prove she is more than just a dumb blonde stereotype. Though a misfit at Harvard Law School, Elle makes her place with her smarts and hard work. Legally Blonde is a fun movie to add to your Galentine’s Day watchlist because Elle Woods proves you don’t need to change yourself to fit in or be successful. Being yourself and working hard is what matters. Besides, Elle Woods is a self-love queen, and we love her for it!
4. Clueless
Loosely based on the Jane Austen novel, Emma, Clueless is one of the OG Galentine’s Day movies. The story follows the rich and popular Cher Horowitz who befriends a new student and gives her a makeover while also playing matchmaker for her teachers. Though a kind-hearted, well-intentioned girl, some of Cher’s actions are questionable, but she takes accountability for them and apologises when needed. Through her misguided actions, Cher learns more about herself and what holds the most importance in life.
5. Hidden Figures
We love a good women-empowering-women movie, and Hidden Figures fits the bill perfectly. The movie follows three African-American mathematicians Katherine Goble Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson who worked at NASA during the Space Race. The three women are relegated to being computers, performing math calculations with no idea about their use. Despite being talented in their respective jobs, all of them face discrimination based on race and sex. Hidden Figures is the story of three women overcoming their circumstances to make their place in the world and proving they are no less than their male or White counterparts. So, if you and your gang of girls want a dose of inspiration, Hidden Figures is the perfect watch.
6. Pitch Perfect
An all-girls acapella group, the Barden Bellas compete against a group from their college to become the reigning acapella group at the Nationals. After facing a shameful defeat in the 2011 ICCA Finals against their all-male rival group Barden Treblemakers, the Bellas are ready to get into the ring for another fight. Despite challenges, a group of talented girls re-establishes the Bellas and makes their way to winning the Nationals.
7. Ocean’s 8
The movie follows a group of women who plan a sophisticated heist at the annual Met Gala. And nothing brings a group of women together like a victimless crime. Spearheaded by Debbie Ocean, Lou, Constance, Amita, Tammy, Nine Ball, and Rose Weil get together to execute the biggest heist of their life – to steal a $150 million Cartier necklace from the Met Gala. If your vibe of the day is action and fun, Ocean’s 8 is the perfect movie to add to your Galentine’s Day watchlist.
