You’re curled up in bed, staring at the ceiling, and your emotions are all over the place. You’re crying at a cute puppy video and ready to throw something across the room in rage, all at the same time. But don’t worry because here are some easy ways to manage your mood swings during PMS and menstruation.

1. Cycle specific nutrition

Ever notice how your cravings get all out of whack during your period? Instead of reaching for that pack of chips, try some almonds, cashews, or even a bowl of rajma or palak dal. Complex carbs like a bowl of moong dal khichdi or a sweet potato are also comforting. Not only are they tasty, but they also help balance your mood.

If you live with someone, you can ask them to cook khichdi or daal for you. If you live alone, we suggest you stock up on some boiled rajma and sweet potato before your period starts.

2. Mood journaling

If you go from Geet to train-wala Aditya in seconds, journaling will help. Keep a little journal by your bed and write down how you’re feeling. This will make you feel light and you might start to notice patterns. Family drama may be amping up your mood swings or binge-watching crime shows may be putting you on edge. Once you see the triggers, it’s easier to manage them.

3. L-Theanine for gentle relaxation

When we are talking about easy ways to manage mood swings, L-Theanine deserves special mention. Found naturally in green tea, L-Theanine promotes calmness, affecting your dopamine and serotonin levels. It’s especially helpful if anxiety or racing thoughts are a big part of your mood swings.

However, we do not recommend you consume L- Theanine supplements or consume it in any form if you’re breastfeeding or pregnant.

4. Essential oils

Jasmine oil is perfect for when your emotions are threatening to spill over. Dab a little on your wrists, breathe in deeply, and let the oil do its magic. Similarly, lemongrass oil is like the zesty drink you need when you’re feeling drained. Diffuse it in your room and watch how it lifts your spirits.

5. Caffeine alternatives

We all love our chai, but did you know too much caffeine can actually worsen mood swings? Don’t panic. There are mood-boosting alternatives available. Tulsi tea, for example, reduces stress and balances hormones. You can also try jeera water. Boil some cumin seeds, cool the water, and sip. Not only does it help with bloating, but it also has a grounding effect on your mood.

6. In-bed yoga

No, we’re not talking about king pigeon pose. We’re talking super low effort, but super effective, yoga poses.

Supta baddha konasana (reclining bound angle pose)

This one is pure magic. Lie on your back, bring the soles of your feet together and let your knees fall open to the sides. It helps release tension in the lower abdomen and hips, where most of the PMS pain and irritability live.

Viparita karani (legs up the wall)

Just put your legs up against the wall and that’s it. It’s like flipping a switch in your body that calms your mind and mood. Plus, you don’t have to move much.

7. Binge-watch

When mood swings hit, skip the intense thrillers and opt for some classic comedies or feel-good movies like Hera Pheri or Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. They are like a warm, familiar blanket that’ll make you laugh and forget the emotional storm in your mind.

8. Cosy comfort

What you wear can either irritate you more or make you feel like you’re wrapped in a cloud. Go for soft, breathable fabrics like cotton kurtas or that favourite soft shawl you love. It’s a small thing, but it can make a huge difference, especially when everything else feels overwhelming.

9. The cold therapy trick

This one’s an oldie but a goldie. Whenever you go to the washroom to change your pad, splash your face with cool water. Cool water helps activate the part of your nervous system that calms you down. You can also try a cold towel on your neck for a quick mood reset.

10. Phone a friend

Sometimes, all you need is to connect with someone who gets it. Call your friend and just rant. Just blurting out everything that’s on your mind will make you feel lighter and relaxed.

11. Music to your rescue

Music is an easy way to manage your mood swings. Whenever you’re stuck in bed, let songs take you to a happier place. You can curate your own playlist in advance or check this one out. This playlist has a mix of peppy Bollywood hits as well as soulful tracks.
