Holi is all fun and games until the colours wreak havoc on your dyed hair. Whether you’ve got pastel pink locks, balayage highlights, or a rich brunette tone, the last thing you want is your colour fading or your strands feeling like straw. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here are some fool-proof tips to protect and care for your coloured hair this Holi.

1. Skip shampoo
Greasy hair is your best friend on Holi as the natural oils protect your hair and keep the colours from seeping in. No matter how much you want to shampoo your hair, avoid shampooing just a day before Holi as it will strip your hair of its natural oils.
2. Oil your hair, like dadi said
Before stepping out for the celebrations, generously apply coconut, almond, or olive oil to your hair, focusing on the ends and roots. This creates a protective barrier, preventing colours from penetrating deep into your strands. If you have extra dry hair, mix a few drops of argan oil for added nourishment. It also makes post-Holi hair washing much easier.
3. Go for a chic protective hairstyle
Tight braids, buns, or a sleek ponytail will reduce colour exposure and tangling. If you’re feeling fancy, wrap your hair in a silk scarf or wear a hat for extra protection. It makes for a trendy Holi look!
4. Use a pre-Holi hair mask
If you have to wash your hair just before Holi, apply a hydrating hair mask with ingredients like shea butter, aloe vera or keratin. This will deeply nourish your hair, making it less porous and less likely to absorb harmful colours.
5. Rinse with cold water first
Once the celebrations are over, don’t jump straight into shampooing. Rinse your hair with cold water for at least five minutes to remove as much colour as possible before applying any product. Hot water opens up the hair cuticle, making it easier for colours to seep in so always do cold rinses.
6. Use a sulphate-free shampoo
Harsh shampoos can strip away not just Holi colours but also your expensive hair dye. Start with a sulphate-free shampoo to cleanse without drying out your hair. If colours are stubborn, use a clarifying shampoo once but don’t overdo it, as it can fade your hair colour faster.
7. Deep condition like your hair depends on it (because it does)
Holi colours can be drying, and coloured hair already needs extra hydration. Use a deep conditioning mask or a leave-in conditioner to bring back the moisture and prevent frizz. Look for masks with hydrolysed keratin, argan oil, or hyaluronic acid for the best results.
8. Say no to heat styling for a few days
Your hair has already been through enough stress, so avoid heat styling like straightening or curling for at least 3–4 days. Let your hair breathe and recover naturally. If you must style it, use a heat protectant spray and set your styling tools to the lowest heat setting.
9. Keep your hair hydrated from the inside
All the external care won’t be as effective if you’re not nourishing your hair from within. Drink plenty of water and eat hair-friendly foods rich in biotin, omega-3, and vitamin E, such as avocados, nuts, and spinach, to maintain your coloured hair.
Follow these tips to protect your coloured hair so that they remain vibrant, soft, and healthy even after the wildest Holi party. Happy Holi!
