Have you been waiting for a ‘good’ Bollywood film for ages? In a sea of new masala films, we are flocking to theatres to watch blockbuster re-releases. We need the old Bollywood back that made us fall in love with cinema in the first place. Director Reema Kagti might have overheard us when she decided to give us a wholesome film in Superboys Of Malegaon. Inspired by Faiza Ahmad Khan’s documentary, Supermen Of Malegaon (2012), Reema Kagti has reproduced the story for a mainstream Indian audience. Here is our review of Superboys Of Malegaon.

Written by Varun Grover, the film is about the people of Malegaon village who love movies. Nasir (Adarsh Gourav), a budding director, gets pirated tapes of English classics starring Charlie Chaplin, Bruce Lee and other legendary actors. When they don’t do well in Nasir’s father’s theatre, he hatches another plan to bring back the audience. He creates a film by mixing bits and pieces of other movies. However, the plan backfires as the police shut down the cinema hall for screening pirated movies. But who can stop a person with big dreams? And so, Nasir plans to bring Mumbai to Malegaon by starting his own production house.

With no budget for grand sets and experienced actors, Nasir uses makeshift materials to remake Sholay (1975) as Malegaon Ke Sholay. He recruits his friends — Farogh (Vineet Kumar Singh), Akram (Anuj Singh Duhan), Irfan (Saqib Ayub), Shafique (Shashank Arora) and Aleem (Pallav Singgh) — to act in his films. While they all live with the idea that ‘agar picture banaani hai, toh doobna padega‘, their friendship seems to falter in the process. Will they make a blockbuster movie or fail? Will Malegaon create history and make a mark in Bollywood?

Produced by Reema Kagti, Zoya Akhtar, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, the film features outstanding actors. Adarsh, as Nasir, is a delight to watch on screen. He is the protagonist of the story who masterfully plays the antagonist for his friends at times. Other actors, including Shashank and Vineet, deliver intense performances while keeping the humour alive. Saqib, Anuj and Pallav’s raw acting makes the story more relatable for the audience.
