Are all criminals, criminals? Or is there more to that piece of paper that defines their crime? These questions must have riddled Vikramaditya Motwane’s and Satyanshu Singh’s minds too as they created the series, Black Warrant. Based on Sunil Gupta and Sunetra Choudhury’s novel, Black Warrant: Confessions of a Tihar Jailor, the web series questions India’s judiciary system. Starring Kareena Kapoor’s cousin, Zahan Kapoor as Sunil Gupta in the lead, the series reveals the true stories of Tihar Jail, Asia’s biggest prison. Does the show deserve a prime spot on your watchlist? Read our review of Black Warrant to know more.

This book-to-screen adaptation uncovers the thin line between right and wrong. Black Warrant is told from the lens of a jailor who’s not even fit to be one in the first place. How does he manage to be a jailor then? Sunil Gupta, who reeks of innocence, convinces everyone to make him the Assistant Superintendent of Police. However, as the brutality of the stingy cells creeps up on him, he realises he does not possess the ‘strong’ demeanour needed for the job. But he can’t go back to nothing because he desperately wants to earn for his family. Black Warrant recounts some of the most infamous stories of Indian criminal history including the Ranga-Billa case. Did these criminals really commit the crimes for which they were punished?

Yes. The series reflects Vikramaditya Motwane and Satyanshu Singh’s creative brilliance in each episode. Every passing minute will leave you curious about what’s to come. The series’ truthfulness is engaging as it presents raw, unfiltered stories of the inmates. The incidents are brought to life by an ensemble cast who deliver stellar performances. Rahul Bhat, Paramvir Singh Cheema, and Anurag Thakur bring much-needed authenticity to the series through their acting. Other actors including Sidhant Gupta, Tota Roy Chowdhury, Rajendra Gupta, Rajshri Deshpande, Joy Sengupta, and Priya Chauhan also elevate the script through their craft.

All eyes on Zahan Kapoor

The star kid reflects the Kapoor genes and his innate talent through his outstanding performance in the lead role. He does justice to the character of Sunil Gupta with his terrific innocence and courage. Zahan Kapoor becomes the star of the series as he brilliantly personifies the minute details of the writing.

Black Warrant is now streaming on Netflix.

Can you watch it with your family?: The series depicts explicit sexual violence, suicide, and obscene language. So, it’s not fit for a family watch.
