On June 14, 2020, we received the tragic news of the passing of a talented young actor, Sushant Singh Rajput. It was a piece of news that came out of the blue; no one had expected anything like that to happen. Soon after, the media began reporting it as a possible suicide case as the actor was found hanging from his ceiling fan. While the public was still coping with the tragic news, a fresh narrative started circling in the media — a murder theory! It has been close to three months now, and his fans want justice for SSR. But the problem is, the #JusticeForSSR campaign is taking an ugly turn to focus on two individuals alone — Kangana Ranaut and Arnab Goswami.

It’s ‘Jhansi Ki Rani‘ and ‘Pride of India’ now

In a case that was never about them, one can’t help but notice the bizarre attention being placed on Kangana Ranaut and Arnab Goswami. The entire case of Sushant Singh Rajput’s death seems to be moving away from the central issue. Every day, we find new Twitter trends in the name of Kangana Ranaut and Arnab Goswami. Take a look at some of the recent ones:

From #JusticeForSSR to #AntiHindu and #AntiNationalist

The death of Sushant Singh Rajput has witnessed several jumps in narratives over the last three months. Nepotism, money laundering, drug cartels are only some of them. But amidst the entire Justice for SSR campaign, where did religion and nationalism come in? Through her interviews about the SSR death case, Kangana Ranaut has been talking about the alleged anti-Hindu and anti-nationalist brigade within Bollywood. Why? Why is it so hard to keep the case limited to what it really is about?

Every now and then, she’s narrating her own experiences over and over again on news channels. But here’s the deal — how has the death of one actor become a reason to troll and ridicule other actors? Every other actor, according to Kangana, is B-grade or ‘chaaploos‘. Her followers have been trolling actors like Alia Bhatt, Deepika Padukone, Taapsee Pannu, and Swara Bhaskar, in the name of nepotism and ‘mental health ka dhhandha‘.

Check out this ‘repeat after me‘ tweet that went viral with people trolling Deepika Padukone for her depression:

The newfound love for the #BoycottBollywood trend

Through this #JusticeForSSR campaign, Kangana and Arnab are tearing apart every other actor. Even Ayushmann Khurrana hasn’t been spared. Any actor who even has a remote friendship or professional relationship with a big Bollywood name has been trashed. Result? The mob is all up in arms to boycott every new Bollywood project. Whether you talk about Janhvi Kapoor’s Gunjan Saxena, Alia Bhatt’s Sadak 2, or the upcoming Ishaan Khatter-Ananya Panday starrer Khaali Peeli, these have all been victims of the boycott trend.

The media trials and Arnab Goswami as the Messiah

The Indian media is now conducting their own trials in the #JusticeForSSR campaign. No matter which news channel you watch, there’s always a report on ‘who killed Sushant’. Arnab Goswami, it seems, has forgotten that he’s running a news channel for the country. The COVID-19 pandemic, India’s GDP, the failing economy, the struggles of students giving JEE-NEET exams, unemployment, and every other event in this country are all unimportant, it appears. Because, apparently, Bharat sirf yeh poochhta hai ke Sushant ko kisne maara!

As if they have nothing better to report, news channels are now critically analysing the chats between Rhea Chakraborty and others. They’re even trying to redefine the meanings of phrases used every day in millennial slang.

Apparently, ‘IMMA BOUNCE’ refers to a bounced cheque…

Every single day, news channels spend hours presenting ‘facts’ and videos of ‘sting operations’ to bring the culprits to justice. If that’s not enough, we then have to see hours of footage of their news reporters running after cars and hounding people.

People are now demanding a dope test for all Bollywood actors before they start any new project. Not only that, people also want Bollywood actors to be caught and beaten up.

What the #JusticeForSSR case shouldn’t be about

When you try to flip through news channels, you find more of Kangana and Arnab and less of anything about the actual case. And now to add to the matter, Kangana has even been granted Y-plus security for her travel to Mumbai. It does make one wonder why the tax payer’s money should provide security to an actor who can clearly afford her own security team!

If Sushant Singh Rajput did not die by suicide, everyone fighting for his cause deserves to be given due credit. But fighting for one cause shouldn’t mean taking everyone else down. Justice for SSR can be sought without:

  1. Shaming other actors for being friendly with the big leagues. Making friends isn’t a crime
  2. Shaming people for not speaking up in this matter. Everyone has a right to maintain silence
  3. Ridiculing people for their mental illnesses
  4. Making it all about one actor and one news anchor

Let the case be about Sushant Singh Rajput and not about everything but him!
