My heart screamsHoga Drake, hoga Beiber, sadda ta Diljit hi hai” every time I groove to his songs. It’s a fact universally acknowledged that Diljit Dosanjh’s brilliance is worth the fame he has today. He is the soul of the Punjabi music industry, with the maximum fanbase across all ages. It was evident from his recent Dil-Luminati India Tour 2024, where many fans were left heartbroken when his tickets got sold out in just a few minutes. As much that proves his versatility, it also sparked an online debate. Diljit Dosanjh’s concert ticket prices have become the topic of many discussions. But why are people targeting the G.O.A.T all of a sudden?

Mumbai-based influencer and content creator Saumya Sahni recently put out a reel talking about the exorbitant prices of concert tickets by Indian artists in India. People were quick to point out that she was referring to Diljit Dosanjh.

Sahni supported the worries of a middle-class, unemployed fanbase who deserve to see their favourite singer’s live performance while also pointing out that the artist does not have any right to charge such high prices. She now stands on the receiving end of both hate and support. But how did other fans react to it?

E-lafda on its way

This waged an online battle that divided fans on extreme ends. A video editor who goes by the Instagram name, In Other Words, defended Diljit with his ‘Economics 101’. He says that the artist proves the good financial power of the ‘poor economy of India’ as a majority of them bought the so-called high-priced tickets, leaving the entire show sold out. Then who’s behind this kalesh?

Logic 101

Definitely not Diljit Dosanjh, as fans are still showering him with love. The management team decides an event’s budget and related costs, including tickets. The artist only tries to live up to the costs and expectations of his fans through his art. It is important to note that Diljit Dosanjh’s concert tickets were initially released at a lower price of ₹1,499 for the Silver Area. The prices surged with each phase in no time, leaving a lot of fans disheartened.

There’s always a reason

The debate raises the question — is art only for the elite? It might seem so, but various technicalities go into commercialising art for everyone, irrespective of anyone’s pocket power. Each fan contributes to the artist’s fame as they access it through different mediums like back and front seats, music platforms and so on. Moreover, an established artist sets the stage for newcomers in the industry to tap into the audience. What they charge for their art decides what other artists can charge to build their audience and make a name.

So, if you haven’t been able to book your tickets to Dil-Luminati Tour 2024, it’s alright, neither have I. Let’s just listen to him on Spotify on full volume to drown out the sound of our tears!
