Winter brings warm cuddles, hearty conversations, festive celebrations, and the wedding season in India — but not for everyone. The charm of festive lights tends to dim for some people as the New Year creeps closer. And that’s when the winds of breakup season hit them. Some might be dancing to wedding tunes or giving a sweater to their sweeter half, while some relate to the “It’s not you, it’s me” posts on Instagram. Are you in a shaky relationship or do you know someone in one who’s anticipating the blues? Let’s dive into this phenomenon to learn more.

It’s the most dreaded yet oddly predictable time of the year when couples call it quits. While breakups can happen anytime over the year, they usually increase from November to January. However, breaking up with your partner shouldn’t follow a mahurat as it’s better to walk out as soon as possible from a taxing relationship. But even then, why does this sad yet liberating thing have a season?

Why does breakup season exist?

It might seem like a first-world problem or a social media trend, but breakup season is real. In the Indian context, November to January is when you celebrate Diwali, attend fun parties & weddings, and then celebrate Christmas while awaiting the New Year. Amidst all this, there are also seasonal blues as we shift to winter, entering the solitude phase. While singles want someone to cuddle with and sip on hot chocolate, committed people want to take a backseat from this.

New year, new me, no bae

During this period, we slip into an introspective mode. We want to reflect on the whole year, our failures, achievements, and the relationships we shared. With refined resolutions and dreams, we feel compelled to choose the right people who can help us achieve those goals. Moreover, as the New Year comes closer, you want to debut the ‘new you’. And when people in relationships don their thinking hat, they tend to break up with their partners and start afresh. They don’t want to fake happiness anymore and end things for good. In some rare cases, people chicken out before the festive season, especially Christmas, so they are not obliged to get expensive gifts for their partners and save on that money. But how do you deal with this drama when celebrations are in the air?

We know breaking up with your bae wasn’t easy, especially when it’s winter. It’s okay, you got this, babe. Throw a breakup party, take some tequila shots with your friends, and dance the sadness away. But this isn’t your cue to text them back. So, follow these tips to deal with the breakup like a mature adult.

Pep talk: You put too much thought into doing the right thing, now do some more of it to let go of them. Give yourself a nice talk in the mirror, remembering why you broke up in the first place. Moreover, think of it as Diwali safai. You simply decluttered a person from your life to make space for better things.

Be with your loved ones: It’s still a festive time, so try to be around your family and friends who can support you during this phase. Take some time off from the celebrations if they overwhelm you.

Take up a hobby: Channel the sadness into something you love doing. Paint it out, listen to music, go for a fun workshop, or do anything that can fix your mood.

Exercise: We know getting fit is already on your New Year’s bingo card. So, start early as those pent-up emotions need an outlet too. Exercising will release endorphins, helping you to fight the pain and stress.

Recharge, not rebound: Take this time to focus on self-growth instead of impulsively downloading a dating app. This will complicate things for you. Moreover, if it gets difficult to deal with, seek help from a professional therapist.
