Arranged marriage meetings can be tense and scary, bachche, but not if you know some of the red flags that should bring out your inner Milkha Singh. If your parents have arranged a rishta meeting with the “best boy with the best family in the world”, you know what you need to do, girls. Your folks have already decided that they’re perfect, so now, it’s up to you to find their flaws. Here are a few things every girl should look out for in arranged marriage meetings.

The boy starts checking you out as soon as you enter the room

If you’re having one of those filmy rishta meetings where you have to make an entrance in front of the guests, notice the boy’s reaction. Is the good boy greeting you politely like a normal person or is the creep checking you out as if you’re a juicy steak? If he’s a creep with you in the first meeting, please know that you’re not the first or last girl he will be checking out like a leech.

He talks about himself a lot and doesn’t ask you much

“What can you cook?” does not count as an attempt to know more about you, beta ji. Get a grip. If he’s bragging about his career, his life, and his family, but looks distracted when you’re talking, yawn in front of him to offend his ego and hasten his departure. Cherry on this red flag cake is if he says he makes enough money so you don’t have to work. At this point, take the chai and samosa plate from him and tell him to leave. Such men don’t take hints very well, bachche.

The parents start listing out their “sabse important” relatives

This is not a kind initiation for you into the family, bachche. This is a list of people for whom you and your parents will be expected to buy expensive gifts. Or give mote-mote lifaafe at the milni. Ask yourself, how important is a bua ki nanad for anyone? But when it comes to a wedding, suddenly, ladke ki bua ki nanad is “sabse khaas“. Offer your own list of relatives, if you want to have some fun looking at their reactions. Just make sure you don’t marry into this criminal-adjacent family.

The boy’s papa constantly talks over the mummy

Cringe Pro Max, bachche! It is never okay for a man to be talking over a woman, let alone his wife, constantly. If the papa is doing this and the mummy is taking it quietly, that is what your future will look like if you marry this boy. All boys learn how to treat women from their parents, especially from their fathers. And if a man behaves like that in someone else’s house, imagine how he would be talking to his wife at home. This should prompt an instant no from you. Instant!

They sound too good to be true

If you think they’re saying all the right things and doing everything by the book, you need to investigate. Speaking from experience, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. “Tum bahu nahi, beti ban kar aaogi” can be code for “We will be your priority now, not your own parents”. “Hum koi rok-tok nahi karte” can be code for “We are entitled to do rok-tok if we want to, but look how generous we are!” Dig below the surface and you will find dirt, bachche. Be careful.
