When one talks about globalisation, it isn’t just the import and export of goods and services that come to mind. With easy travel across continents, migrating to new countries has become quite common. However, uprooting your lives in pursuit of migration isn’t as simple as it seems. It is a big decision that involves weighing numerous pros and cons to ascertain whether it would be the right thing to do. One of the most popular destinations for Indians happens to be Canada. According to Forbes, between 2016 and 2019, there was a 105 percent increase in Indian immigration to Canada. With simpler Indo-Canada policies, migrating to Canada seems like a feasible choice for most.

The Canadian education system, too, appeals to Indian youth as it allows them to score higher points for work as well as other residency visas. Between 2016 and 2018, there was an increase of 127 percent Indian international students in Canada. If you’re planning to migrate to Canada too and are looking for things you need to consider, here’s a checklist for you.

1. Do your research

Moving to a new country or city requires that you conduct thorough research. You should have all your questions listed down with answers before you make a decision. The questions should include crucial aspects like job availability, financial stability, foreign policies, and the viability of your qualifications in the destination country.

2. Be prepared for the cold weather

India is a tropical country with most parts of the country experiencing a long summer. Even in the winter, most states don’t experience subzero temperatures. However, the Canadian winter, for most Indians, is the live version of Frozen. So, being mentally and physically prepared to experience crazy cold temperatures is a must.

3. You’re all on your own

As Indians, we’re used to having domestic help. Most countries in the west don’t have this culture, and if you’re planning on migrating to Canada, be prepared to cook, clean, and wash on your own. We advise learning a few quick recipes before you catch the flight!

4. Indian items are available in Canada

For most Indians migrating to Canada, the biggest worry is food, and there’s a major misconception about Indian items not being available in a foreign land. However, most foreign countries today have Indian stores where you’ll get everything, from your favourite dal and masalas to Haldiram’s aloo bhujia.

5. Getting a job in Canada

According to a YouTube channel, it is possible for one to get a job in Canada before actually moving to the country. However, they warn against fraudulent activities and agents that scam people in the name of filing LMIA in exchange for thousands of dollars! Check out the video here:

6. Be positive but realistic

Most online surveys and opinions will have you believe that Canada is, in fact, one of the best places for Indians. While most of that is true, it shouldn’t make one expect a rosy life. Migrating to Canada comes with its own set of struggles especially when managing life on a minimum wage.

Migrating to Canada is a dream for many and it is one that can be achieved with the right plan of action. If you have more points to keep in mind when migrating to Canada or anywhere else in the world, do share them with us!
