But for some, the excitement fades fast as they get acne right after indulging in mangoes. If you relate to this, you’re not alone. Many people experience sudden breakouts and flare-ups just when they savour their favourite summer fruit. It turns out, mangoes could be playing a not-so-sweet role in your acne drama. Let’s dive in to the problem a bit more to understand the cause. Here’s why mangoes might be causing acne on your skin.

The connection between mango and acne

While mango is rich in antioxidants that promote good skin health, it can trigger acne in some people. This is because mangoes are high in Glycemic Index (GI), which measures how quickly a food item raises blood sugar levels in a person. Mangoes have high sugar content, which in turn spikes blood sugar levels and leads to high insulin. Increased insulin further promotes oil production in sebaceous glands. Now, oily skin attracts dust and other impurities, clogging the pores and causing acne. The condition only worsens for people who are naturally prone to acne and other skin conditions.

Additionally, the white sappy fluid in mangoes containing phytic acid interferes with the absorption of vitamins and minerals. So, our skin loses out on nutrients, which leads to dullness, uneven texture and acne. Furthermore, nowadays, mangoes and other fruits are injected with harmful chemicals to ripen quickly. This can also trigger certain skin conditions. However, a mango alone can’t be blamed for the acne breakouts you might be facing. Multiple reasons lead to this skin condition.

Other factors contributing to acne breakouts

While mango has the potential to cause acne on your skin, your lifestyle choices play a key role as well. Are you getting enough sleep? How prone are you to stress? Do you eat a balanced diet or still munch on junk food? Factors including dietary choices, weather conditions, hormones, skincare and haircare routines, and stress influence acne. It is then important to follow a healthy lifestyle so you can enjoy those mangoes guilt-free every summer.

Remedies to cure summer acne

Do you want to enjoy mangoes in summer without worrying about acne and other skin conditions? Follow these easy remedies to cure pimples without compromising on your love for mango.

1. Limit the consumption

Summers are synonymous with mangoes, and we get your love for the delicious fruit. While you shouldn’t completely deny yourself, you shouldn’t eat loads of it either. Soak the mangoes in water for at least 2-3 hours before consuming them. This will reduce the heat of the mango, lowering the risk of acne.

2. Avoid high-calorie foods

To prevent acne in summer, you must avoid oily foods or lots of dairy products in your diet. Furthermore, you must increase your water intake to keep yourself hydrated. This will also remove the toxins from your body, lessening the risk of acne breakouts and other skin conditions.

3. Follow a proper skincare routine

Different seasons follow different skincare routines. In the summer, when we are sweating in the harsh heat, our skin yearns for protection and hydration. So, you need to include products in your skincare regimen that hydrate your skin and protect them from the sun. However, you must always consult your dermatologist as not all ingredients suit every skin type.

4. Stop picking on those pimples

I get it, the constant urge to pop that annoying little pimple and stop the itching. But, let’s face it – as satisfying as that process might be, it only aggravates acne. Also, the invisible dirt on our hands can worsen skin conditions when in contact with the affected areas. In short, stop touching your face unnecessarily.

5. Focus on your physical and mental wellbeing

It’s not always the evident factors that cause acne. Sometimes, seemingly trivial factors can also lead to the same issue. You must do regular workouts and walk after meals to enhance your physical health. Try meditation to ease stress and take breaks from work or high stimuli environments. This will maintain the cortisol levels in your body which are the primary stress hormones. It will further prevent the overproduction of oil in your skin, thereby reducing acne.
