Mother’s Day 2024 is just around the corner, and it is the perfect day to celebrate your supermom. All the moms-to-be, new moms, saasu moms, and all other moms in the world, must be expecting a ‘World’s Best Mom’ card, no? While you might have expectations from your children because you delivered and raised them, this year, take a look in the mirror. Are you being the role model they can look up to? Don’t worry ladies, here are some tips on how to be a good mother that your kids need.

1. Teach them valuable life lessons, khana toh Zomato se aa jaayega

Break the age-old notion of ‘girls should know how to cook’. Yes, they should never starve to death, but dearest mummy ji, Zomato hai na. Teach your daughters valuable life lessons like how to be kind and empathetic, but not take sh*t from people. Be it her work or sasural, your girl should know who she is as an individual and that she deserves respect. Then, teach your girls and boys to cook if you want to pass on your talent.

2. Look after yourself and teach her to be the main character of her story

Sweating in the kitchen and doing everyone’s laundry doesn’t make you a cool mom, ladies. If you think these skills are essential for your daughter to survive in society, you’re probs wrong. If you want to know how to be a good mother, you need to set a better example. Taking care of yourself, prioritising your needs, taking breaks, and delegating tasks is how you do it. So, this Mother’s Day, gift your sons and daughters the role model they deserve.

3. Teach her financial independence, pati se pocket money lena isn’t cool

Your daughter shouldn’t be chasing suitable men to marry. Instead, she should be chasing her dreams, high-paying jobs and passion. She doesn’t need to live on pocket money or depend on the men in her life to provide for her. It’s 2024, your daughter should be financially independent, so teach her that. Don’t force her to hand over all her jaidad and zewar to her saasu mom for safekeeping; she is capable of looking after a bunch of keys.

4. Don’t nag her to have children, unless they are pups

Looking after oneself is a task in today’s date, let alone a small human who constantly cries, is always hungry, and poops nonstop. Just because you did it, doesn’t mean your daughter has to. Let her choose whether or not she wants children and when. And if you’re so crazy about having grandchildren, gift her a pup and enjoy the baby fever.

5. Be a good listener

Giving your daughters taane all day long is not what a super mom does; this is lesson 101 on how to be a good mother. Instead, letting her rant, speaking about her worries and bitching about her toxic boss is what’ll make you her go-to person. So, don’t dismiss her like your parents probably did and set a good example for her to follow. After all, a mom is always a daughter’s best friend, so let her come and spill all the tea to you.

6. Focus on changing your POV when required

Nobody wants to hear ‘hamare zamaane mein toh aisa nahi hota tha‘. Zamaana has changed, mummy ji, and you need to evolve with it. You might have gone through your own set of challenges but your children have their own dragons to slay. So, show some support and try to change your perspective with changing times. A supportive parent is the best parent.

7. Break gender stereotypes and roles

Things like filing income taxes, changing bulbs, paying bills, and driving around are not gender specific. Teaching that to your children is how you become a good mom. Don’t assign household chores based on gender and let everyone do what they are capable of. Your son can help you around the kitchen while your daughter can pay the bills. Gender roles aren’t a thing today; make sure you teach them that.
