Pollution is at its peak, wreaking havoc on our lungs, eyes, and even our hair. At the same time, it’s wedding season and sleek and shiny locks are essential. So, how do you manage this tricky situation? The answer lies in your kitchen. These homemade hair masks are perfect for tackling damaged hair.
1. Multani mitti and water hair mask
There’s a reason our nani and dadi used to wash their hair with multani mitti. It has excellent absorbent properties making it perfect for deep cleansing. It cleanses all the pollutants and buildup from your hair and also soothes the scalp.
Ingredients:
Multani mitti
Water
Method:
Add water to multani mitti and make a thick paste. Apply it on your scalp and the length of your hair and wait for 20 to 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with a bit of warm water.
2. Banana and honey hair mask
Constant exposure to pollutants leads to an itchy and flaky scalp and that’s where this mask steps in as a saviour. Bananas are rich in potassium, natural oils, carbohydrates and vitamins, which help soften the hair and protect the hair’s natural elasticity, preventing split ends and breakage.
Ingredients:
A banana
1 tbsp honey
Method:
Grind the banana into a smooth paste instead of mashing it to avoid the lumps getting stuck in your hair. Add honey to it and mix well. Apply it well on your hair and scalp and leave for 20-30 minutes. Now rinse your hair with lukewarm water and shampoo as usual.
3. Green tea and egg hair mask
Green tea is known for its benefits in weight loss but what if I tell you it has more benefits than one when it comes to hair care? It contains vitamin B that moisturises your hair, vitamin E that keeps your hair smooth, and anti-inflammatory properties that keep your scalp healthy. Egg, as we all know, is great for adding shine to your hair. If you don’t like eggs, you can also use aloe vera.
Ingredients:
½ cup water
1 green tea bag or 1 spoon green tea leaves
1 egg yolk
Method:
Brew green tea leaves or green tea bag for 4-5 minutes in water. Add the egg yolk to the brewed tea and mix well. Apply this to wet hair and wrap a warm towel for 2 hours. Wash off with shampoo as usual.

4. Avocado, olive oil and lemon hair mask
This mask targets two different issues created by polluted air. Avocados contain natural oils that nourish dry and dehydrated hair while lemon acts as an antifungal agent cleaning all the dust from your scalp.
Ingredients:
1 avocado
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp lemon juice
Method:
Mash the avocado in a bowl and add olive oil and lemon juice. Mix well and apply to your hair for 10-15 minutes and rinse with shampoo. Do not keep the mask for too long as lemon can function as a bleaching agent and bleach your hair.
5. Coconut oil, honey and apple cider vinegar hair mask
Pollution tends to make our hair brittle, dry, and frizzy. This hair mask nourishes your frizzy hair and strengthens them. Also, apple cider vinegar works as a natural fungal treatment, cleaning your scalp without stripping your hair of its natural oils.
Ingredients:
1 tbsp coconut oil
1 tbsp honey
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
Method:
Mix all the three ingredients together and apply to damp hair. Let this mask sit for 10-15 minutes then rinse with lukewarm water.

Fine hair tend to tangle and damage easily. So, if you have fine hair and are looking to treat them without spending a bomb, this hair mask is great for your damaged hair. The combination of honey and milk nourishes hair and strengthens it.
Ingredients:
1 cup skimmed milk (if your hair are not so fine, you can go with full cream milk)
1 tbsp honey
Method:
Add both the ingredients to a spray bottle and mix well. After you have shampooed your hair, spray this on your hair. Leave it for 10-20 minutes and then rinse with warm water. This works more like a conditioner.
7. Avocado and rice water hair mask
Rice water has broken the internet with its miraculous benefits. And it does work wonders in repairing damaged hair. It strengthens the hair follicles and calms scalp irritation. However, it dries out the hair a bit. Add an avocado to balance the dryness, but if you already have dry hair, you might want to skip this one.
Ingredients:
1 cup rice soaked in 2 cups of water for 24 hours
1 avocado
Method:
Mash the avocado and mix with the rice water. Apply to your hair and leave for 20 minutes. Rinse normally.
While there’s no way to escape this pollution, these homemade hair masks will keep your damaged hair healthy.
