We’ve all been there — stepped out for just “5 minutes” in the sun, and boom! You come back looking like a toasted papad. Whether it’s a beach day gone rogue or that last-minute market run without sunscreen, a tan doesn’t take long to show up in the summer. But don’t worry, you don’t need fancy products to heal your skin. Your kitchen is hiding some of the best sun-soothing remedies. Here are eight super-easy, natural DIY face masks for tan removal.

1. Cucumber and curd mask

face masks for tan removal

Ingredients:

Half a cucumber, grated

2 tbsp plain curd (dahi)

Method:

Mix grated cucumber with curd and apply it to your face (or wherever you’ve tanned). Leave it on for 15–20 minutes, then wash off with cool water.

2. Aloe vera and rose water gel mask

Ingredients:

2 tbsp aloe vera gel (fresh or store-bought)

1 tbsp rose water

Method:

Blend the two together and apply a thin layer. Leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse gently. Your skin will feel calmer instantly.

3. Tomato and honey de-tan mask

Ingredients:

1 small tomato (pulped)

1 tsp honey

Method:

Mix tomato pulp with honey and apply to the tanned area. Leave for 15–20 minutes before rinsing off.

Warning: It might sting a little if you’re badly sunburnt, so do a patch test first!

4. Multani mitti and coconut water clay pack

Ingredients:

2 tbsp multani mitti

Enough coconut water to make a paste

Method:

Mix into a smooth paste and apply evenly. Let it dry (about 15 mins), then rinse off with lukewarm water.

5. Haldi and besan mask

Ingredients:

1 tbsp besan

A pinch of haldi

1 tsp milk or rose water

Method:

Make a smooth paste of all three ingredients and apply. Leave on till semi-dry, then gently scrub it off with water in circular motions.

6. Green tea and rice flour mask

Ingredients:

1 tbsp brewed and cooled green tea

1 tbsp rice flour

Method:

Mix green tea water with rice flour until they form a thick paste, then apply gently. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes and rinse off with cool water.

7. Papaya and lemon juice tan removal mask

Ingredients:

2 tbsp ripe papaya pulp

A few drops of lemon juice

Method:

Mix and apply for 10-15 minutes. Wash off gently. Avoid stepping into the sun immediately after — lemon makes skin sensitive to the sun.

Note: Only use lemon if your skin isn’t already irritated or peeling.

8. Potato juice and sandalwood mask

Ingredients:

1 tbsp potato juice

1 tbsp sandalwood powder

Method:

Peel and grate a small potato, then squeeze the grated bits through a muslin cloth or strainer to extract the juice. Mix 1 tablespoon of this juice with sandalwood powder to form a smooth paste. Apply it evenly on your face and let it dry. Rinse off with cool water and gently pat your skin dry.

While these home remedies are fantastic, don’t forget the basics. Keep sipping water, use an umbrella, and don’t skip SPF, no matter how cloudy it looks outside.
So go on, pick your fave tan removal face mask and treat your skin to some well-deserved TLC.
