Costao movie: The plot

Costao Fernandes, a former athlete and a black belt in Karate, harbours a love for football. Instead of being a class footballer, he fancies the role of a goalkeeper. Furthermore, he is a doting father to three kids and a loving husband to Maria. This simple man from a sports quota is also a courageous customs officer. After nabbing 21 criminals, he is now on a mission to bust a major gold smuggling racket in Goa run by D’Mello, a powerful minister. He gets a tip from his most trusted informer and runs to follow D’Mello’s brother, Peter, who is about to unload illegal gold at Goa’s port.

However, in this process, Costao kills Peter in self-defence. The CBI then puts him on trial for the murder. His passion for his job puts his own life at stake. As threats come closer to home, Costao’s relationship with his wife runs into trouble. D’Mello is all set to frame Costao as the murderer and ruin his life. Will he succeed? Or will Costao be proven innocent?

Costao movie review: An excellent slow-burn

The biopic strives to be as real as possible and excels in doing so. Even though Costao is a skilled athlete, he doesn’t have a stereotypical macho aura. There are no glorified action sequences. The film’s hero is deeply flawed. He might be a passionate customs officer, but he is an absent father and a husband. The biopic is not your regular high-stakes crime drama. Then why should you watch it? Costao is among the rare films that surprise you with its tenderness. With a runtime of 120 minutes, the plot unfolds slowly but will leave you thinking about it long after the credits roll.

Costao is beautifully directed with a versatile background score that will transport you to its Goan setting. Without trying to be loud and flashy, the plot will engage you throughout. Costao is a must-watch as it is remarkably packed with drama, subtle humour and emotion. Speaking of emotion, the final act hits hard. So, keep some tissues handy if you tear up.

The cast is superbly talented, from Nawazuddin Siddiqui to the supporting characters. Priya Bapat, as Maria, delivers a class act. She seems effortless in her role of a wife who loves her husband yet finds it hard to understand his love for the country. The child actors in the movie, especially Asmi Deo as Marrisa, who plays the film’s narrator and Costao’s daughter, are a delight to watch. Kishore Kumar Huli, as D’Mello, delivers a powerful performance as the antagonist. Hussain Dalal, as Peter D’Mello, a stereotypical smuggler, leaves a significant impact. Other actors in the supporting cast include Gagan Dev Riar, Mahika Sharma, Rohhit Tiwari and Shravan Fondekar, among others.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui: The golden star of Costao

As the film’s narrator puts it, “Costao bhi 24 carat gold jaisa hai, value toh bohot hai but uska kuchh ho nahin sakta kyunki Costao ke andar bhi koi milawat nahin hai.” The same goes for Nawazuddin’s performance as an actor, as he brilliantly portrays Costao’s straightforward personality. There’s a reason Nawazuddin Siddiqui is widely regarded as one of Bollywood’s finest actors, and Costao reminds us why it is so. He will leave you stunned with his performance in the movie. Whether he is passionately working, caring for his children, loving his wife or being helpless at expressing it, Nawaz effortlessly brings all the emotions to the screen.

Can you watch Costao with your family?: Yes, the movie doesn’t contain explicit violence, obscenity or intimacy, making it a suitable watch with the family.
