Every year, the entertainment industry churns out a lot of crap that people lap up. Now, I’m not pointing any fingers, but if you flocked to the halls to watch one of the biggest hits of this year that started with an A and ended with an L, you could do better. Here are the best movies and shows of 2023 by Team AAE.

1. 12th Fail

One of the best movies I saw this year has to be 12th Fail. Vikrant Massey has outdone himself with this one, and with a crisp storyline and direction, 12th Fail showed us what good cinema looks like. It is a heart-warming watch of undying determination and hard work even when things aren’t always going in your favour. So, if you want to start the new year with some motivation, 12th Fail is releasing on December 29 on Disney+ Hotstar.

2. The Crown

Where do I even begin with this one? The Crown has to be one of the absolute best things to have happened in recent years. Right from the casting and direction to the costumes and storyline, The Crown has nailed it in every possible manner. So, if you’re looking for content that’s a class apart, this show will not disappoint. You can watch all the seasons on Netflix.

3. Scoop

Hansal Mehta’s Scoop is an eye-opener and is based on the life of journalist Jigna Vora. This has to be one of the best shows of 2023 as it had some excellent acting and great direction and left quite an impact. Scoop is streaming on Netflix.

4. Barbie

How can I not put Barbie on the list of the best movies of 2023? Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is a fun, exciting, and endearing watch that will make you laugh, cry, and feel empowered all at the same time. So, if you want to ride a roller coaster of emotions, you can stream Barbie on JioCinema or rent it on Amazon Prime Video.

5. Taj: Divided By Blood

best shows of 2023

Needless to say, I love drama, and when I watched Taj, it gave me a year’s supply of it. The only bad thing I have to say about this series is that I have to wait a long time for the next season to come out. With some amazing performances, the series follows the succession of Akbar and his three sons and unfolds some jaw-dropping facts that history has hidden away.

6. Gulmohar

best movies of 2023

Aarati’s favourite movie of the year is Gulmohar, a warm and moving story about family, love, and loss. It restores Aarati’s faith in Bollywood with its simple storyline that touches the heart. So, if you’re looking for a fun watch with your family and are willing to shed a few tears, Gulmohar is available on Disney+ Hotstar.

7. Friday Night Plan

best movies of 2023

There were bigger movies than Friday Night Plan in 2023, but this one struck a chord with Vrinda. For her, it was relatable, and funny, and took her on a nostalgic trip to her teenage years. She recommends watching this movie with your siblings and having the perfect Friday night family plan! This movie is available on Netflix.

8. The Consultant

best shows of 2023

Sukhmani loves a good thriller, and for her, one of the best shows of 2023 has to be The Consultant. The psychological thriller captivates you and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout. So, if you’re looking for something crazy to watch this New Year’s Eve, bookmark this show. The Consultant is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

9. Kohrra

best movies and shows of 2023

Like I told you, Sukhmani loves a good thriller and another show that has made it to the top of her list is Kohrra. And I have to agree with her because I loved the show as well. Based in Punjab, the drugs, politics, family issues, and murders make this show really gripping and worth every single minute. It has some of the best acting I have ever seen with a crisp storyline that will keep you hooked. You can watch it on Netflix.

10. The Night Agent

The Night Agent has garnered a lot of love and appreciation. It is one of the best shows of 2023 for Pravika. She is another avid fan of good action and thriller content and The Night Agent makes for a riveting watch. It is streaming on Netflix.

11. Made In Heaven S2

Ufaira loves a good dose of entertainment and Made In Heaven S2 has topped the charts for her this year. And I wholeheartedly agree with her because this season was bolder, bigger, and had lots of kalesh, just what we love. So, if you still haven’t seen Karan and Tara making it through another mad season of weddings, failing personal lives, and the reality of the big fat Indian weddings, you’re missing out. It is available on Amazon Prime Video.

12. Shehar Lakhot

best movies and shows of 2023

Bani’s recommendation for 2023 is Shehar Lakhot, a web series full of dark twists and turns. The mysterious series brings some great acting and an engaging plot especially if you love a good dose of drama and nail-biting thrill. You can watch it on Amazon Prime Video.
