Living in cities like Delhi and Mumbai is physically and mentally taxing. More often than not, we wake up to a dusty sky, aching throat, and annoying sneezes due to the allergens in the toxic air. We keep tracking AQI numbers, investing in high-quality, expensive air purifiers and masks. And the results? Not effective enough. Interestingly, there is a beautiful plant that’s quietly replacing artificial air purifiers. And that is the peacock plant.

What is a peacock plant?

The Brazilian peacock plant, also known as Calathea makoyana, is a popular houseplant in India for its aesthetic appeal. But ever since air pollution has risen, the peacock plant has proven to be more than just a treat for the eyes. Its broad, peacock-feather-like leaves open like a fan during the day, and fold up at night, which is why it’s nicknamed the ‘prayer plant’. Lately, peacock plants have become more popular as they work like natural air purifiers.

Are you tired of buying gadgets and air purifiers that promise fresh air but barely deliver? Peacock plants are natural solutions that filter common indoor toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene, and ammonia. They absorb toxins through their leaves and break them down, releasing fresh oxygen. Even the microorganisms present in the soil of the peacock plants filter out the toxic air, so you can breathe easy. Peacock plants also act as natural humidifiers, releasing moisture through transpiration.

Because the peacock plant surrounds you with clean air, you may get relief from skin issues, acne, or throat-related problems. As an indoor plant, Calathea makoyana helps lower stress levels and improve your mood. If you sit to observe the calming visual rhythm of its leaves, you’ll feel at peace within your mind. Having a peacock plant nearby can reduce your mental fatigue, giving your brain some tiny moments of pause throughout the day. But do you know how to care for the peacock plant to achieve the best results, especially when the air is polluted?

How to maintain peacock plants at home

Are you someone who can’t keep your plants healthy for long? Don’t worry, the peacock plant is a low-maintenance indoor plant. Once you understand what it likes, it settles into your home easily and even rewards you with aesthetic beauty and clean, fresh air. Follow these tips to maintain a peacock plant at home.

  • Container: Choose medium-sized terracotta pots with proper drainage holes for the peacock plant, as they allow excess moisture to evaporate. If you’re keeping the plant in plastic or ceramic pots, be punctual with watering schedules.
  • Water: You can water the peacock plant twice or thrice a week in summer and once a week in winter, or whenever the top inch of the soil feels dry. Keep the soil consistently moist, not soggy.
  • Light: Place the prayer plant in bright, indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight can fade or scorch the pattern and colour of its leaves. Contrastingly, keeping the peacock plant in abundant shade can lead to slow growth.
  • Humidity: This plant loves humidity. Keep a tray filled with pebbles under the peacock plant. When you water it, excess water drains into the pebble tray, creating optimal humidity for the peacock plant.
  • Temperature: The peacock plant thrives in warm, stable temperatures. But don’t keep it in direct contact with air conditioners or heaters.
  • Soil: Use well-draining, nutrient-rich soil, such as cocopeat, which holds moisture without becoming waterlogged.
  • Leaf care: Gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust. This way, the plant can breathe and photosynthesise more effectively.
