Planning a trip but don’t want your pet to be in the plane cargo hold? Well, more and more Indian airlines are now allowing pets to fly in the cabin with you. From weight limits to where they can sit (spoiler: not on your lap), here’s everything you need to know about travelling with your pet in the cabin on airlines in India.
1. Akasa Air
Akasa Air stands out as a newer airline that has embraced pet-friendly policies. Launched in August 2022, the airline allows pets like cats and dogs to travel in the cabin on domestic flights. Pets weighing up to 10 kg, including their carriers, are permitted in the cabin, provided they are housed in a well-ventilated container that fits under the seat. The maximum carrier dimensions are 19 inches in length, 12.6 inches in width, and 10 inches in height.
If your pet weighs more than 10 kg but not over 32 kg, the airline offers the option of transporting them in the cargo hold.
2. Air India
Air India, now merged with Vistara, also offers pet-friendly services for domestic and international flights. Like Akasa Air, they allow cats and dogs in the cabin, but the weight limit, including the carrier, is set at 7 kg. For larger pets, Air India provides a cargo option. The airline requires carriers to be soft-sided, leak-proof, and well-ventilated, with dimensions not exceeding 18 inches by 18 inches by 12 inches.
Important things to remember
Flying with your pet comes with some essential prerequisites across all airlines. A valid vaccination and health certificate dated no more than 72 hours before the travel date is mandatory. This document should confirm that your pet is healthy and fit to fly.
Additionally, while most airlines allow only cats and dogs in the cabin, service animals may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Pregnant pets or those under eight weeks old are not eligible to travel. Throughout the journey, pets must remain inside their carriers, placed securely under the seat.
Travelling with your pet can be a rewarding experience if you prepare well. It’s always wise to book early as airlines typically allow a limited number of pets per flight. Familiarise your pet with their carrier before the trip to help them feel at ease. Arriving at the airport earlier than usual can also save you from last-minute stress, as travelling with pets involves extra checks and documentation. Also, if you are travelling with your pet, you should book your flight at least 72 hours prior.
With Akasa Air and Air India leading the way, Indian skies are becoming more welcoming for pet lovers. So pack your bags, grab their favourite toy, and get ready to make memories together!
