Stolen: The plot

Set against the rural backdrop of India, Stolen opens with a woman, Jhumpa, sleeping with her baby in a railway station. All seems calm until another woman steals the child from her mother and escapes in the dense fog. The movie then shows Gautam waiting for his brother, Raman, at the same station so they can go home. Soon, Jhumpa wakes up and is startled to see her baby missing. She screams in panic and blames Raman for the kidnapping. The cops arrive, and things get chaotic until Gautam intervenes to prove his brother’s innocence. While Gautam plans to leave with his brother, Raman stays to help the frantic mother find her missing baby. Will Gautam convince his brother to flee the scene, or will he join him? Will the mother reunite with her child, or is she hiding something?
Stolen movie review: A gritty thriller after ages

The movie defines what a powerful storyline, remarkable acting, and compelling direction mean. It is a classic example of how these three components create magic if executed well. The pace and story of Stolen won’t let you blink for a second. Karan Tejpal’s craft as a writer and director is evident even in the most minor scenes. Be it showing the rage of a village mob, sibling rivalry, or the raw nature of a mother’s grief, Karan does it all. The larger narrative of the dark side of child adoption blends well with the rich and poor divide in India. This social angle elevates the movie’s plot, making it more engaging.
The ensemble cast of Stolen
The movie keeps you guessing every character’s next move as they are deeply layered. Gautam is an elder sibling who seems right in screaming at his brother for siding with Jhumpa. But somewhere, he too sympathises with the woman. Abhishek Banerjee’s talent is mirrored in Gautam’s unfiltered performance. Similarly, Mia Maelzer as Jhumpa portrays the plight of an underprivileged tribal woman who has lost her child. Mia depicts the reality of people who have to repeatedly prove their innocence before seeking help. Shubham Vardhan as Raman is the story’s soul, doing justice to the script of Stolen. His character’s daring move to put his life at risk and rescue Jhumpa’s child might make you question your humanity. Supporting actors, including Harish Khanna and Sahidur Rahaman as cops, leave a lasting impact.
Abhishek Banerjee steals the spotlight in Stolen

He first amazed us with his performance in Stree. Then we saw him as Hathoda Tyagi in the Paatal Lok franchise, sending a chill down our spines. And now, Abhishek Banerjee’s return as Gautam in Stolen is nothing short of brilliance. His raw expressions in the film make it hard to decide if Gautam is just a character or a real person. Abhishek’s impeccable acting adds to the fear, thrill and frustration we feel while watching the movie.
Stolen is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
Can you watch Stolen with your family?: No, the movie contains explicit violence and obscene language.
