Bollywood is a glam and glitzy business, but the behind-the-scenes aren’t always that glamorous. From dingy rooms to changing your physicality for a role, acting isn’t an easy job. And ace actor Richa Chadha has seen it all. In the latest episode of AfterHours with All About Eve, Richa Chadha opens up about her experience of going from a rowdy kid to a Bollywood legend in the making, what it was like on the sets of Gangs of Wasseypur, and more.

‘Working on Gangs of Wasseypur was difficult’

Shot on a smaller budget with an ensemble cast, Gangs of Wasseypur was one of the best movies to come out of Bollywood and Richa Chadha’s shot to stardom. Speaking on her experience while shooting for the movie, Richa said,

“It was very toxic. Not toxic, but difficult… Chaos is welcome. Everything else is fine. The only thing I feel like where I suffered was, I was so young. I didn’t know how to conduct myself with such a bunch of dudes. To be honest, that’s the only thing. Like the ADs were great. The team was great. Even the actors were great. Everything was fine. The director’s fine. But sometimes, you don’t know what to say to a 50-year-old man, you know. When you are 24, what are you going to say? What conversation can you have if they are going on and on about what happened in NSD in 1950? See, my parents were not even born then. I didn’t know how to conduct myself, how to be in such a testosterone-heavy world.”

Talking about preparing for her character, Nagma Khatoon, Richa further added, “I really had to be in the zone because they were like, today you are 22 years old, then in the afternoon, at night, you are 45 years old and then tomorrow, you are 52 years old and then you have to be 18 years old. So, I was just running in between shots trying to figure out how this character…like what do I do with the age. But I think it worked quite beautifully.”

Richa Chadha also talked about why physicality matters in movies, how she has gained weight for movies only for them to turn out bad, her relationship with Ali Fazal, how her mom thought she was dating Ali Zafar, and more. Listen to her stories on the most recent episode of AfterHours with All About Eve.
