If you’ve been waiting for a year when women take centre stage in Indian movies and series, Netflix India’s 2025 lineup might be your dream come true. This time, it’s not just about love interests or side characters; we’re talking about women who own the narrative.

Among the fresh slate of movies and series, two standouts – Akka and Mandala Murders – promise strong female leads. With mystery, drama, and powerful female characters at the forefront, these titles are set to dominate our screens (and conversations).

Akka – An exploration of matriarchy

The title Akka is a big hint. It means “elder sister” in several South Indian languages. Set in the 1980s in the fictional city of Pernuru, Akka explores a matriarchal society ruled by formidable gangster queens. Their dominance is shaken when an outsider threatens their power, igniting a brutal battle for survival. Directed by Dharmaraj Shetty, the film stars Keerthy Suresh, Radhika Apte, and Tanvi Azmi in powerful roles.

Produced by Yash Raj Films (YRF) Entertainment, this project has already piqued people’s curiosity. And let’s be real – when YRF is involved, you know it’s going to be big.

Mandala Murders – A thrilling crime mystery

If you’re into crime thrillers, Mandala Murders might just be your next obsession. Starring Vaani Kapoor in a never-seen-before avatar, the series follows her character as she dives into a dark conspiracy linked to a centuries-old secret society. Sounds intense, right?

Mandala Murders also features Vaibhav Raj Gupta and Surveen Chawla, and they promise to unravel a mystery that’ll keep us hooked. The show is directed by Gopi Puthran, the mastermind behind Mardaani 2, which means we’re in for some powerful storytelling.

It’s refreshing to see more narratives that put women at the centre, not just feature them as side characters. With Akka and Mandala Murders leading the way, Netflix India is setting the tone for a year filled with powerful, complex, and unforgettable female protagonists.
