There was a time when Kota sarees ruled the summers. The light and airy fabric used to be an excellent protection against the North Indian heat. With the advent of power looms and modern designs though, the age old handloom weavers of Kota had started fast fading into history. Vidhi Singhania decided to do something about it.
The Revivalist
Over the last 21 years, Vidhi has revived Rajasthan’s Kota weaves and given them a new lease of life.
Vidhi Singhania
With a blend of traditional and contemporary designs, the ethereal Kota fabric has once again found its place in fashion trends, thanks to her efforts. “These weaves have a rich narrative and we have to protect, promote and propagate them,” she says.
Her designs are renowned for the intricate karigari that goes into transforming the weave into a piece of art complete with meticulous embroidery, hand painting, butis, motifs and zari.
Weaving Magic
The association started two decades ago, when the Kota weavers were migrating to other jobs because of lack of patronage for their work. Over a 1000 handloom weavers came together under her banner and not only did they save a heritage but are showcasing what magic can be created with the versatile Kota.
The Designs
Paisley motifs, zari work and geometric patterns make her sarees ideal for a soiree or a formal summer event. Her collection comes in myriad shades of yellows, greens, blues, pinks that are bright yet not overwhelming.
Her collection also includes richly designed Banarasi silk and Georgette sarees for bridal wear.
The Takeaway
Kota sarees are light as a feather and drape like a dream. If you are looking to add them to your designer trousseau, then Vidhi Singhania sarees are both affordably priced and elegantly chic.
