The members of a college theatre group in Kolkata come together for a final reunion before the house in which they rehearsed and performed is turned into a heritage hotel. During this drunken night, at Durga Pujo time, stories of painful relationships, regrets and long-held grudges tumble out, giving us an insight into what brought this group together and what took them apart. Homecoming is a simple story about complex human emotions. It won’t tire you out to watch even though the stories are heavy. Instead, it will probably make you want to plan a reunion of your own.
Nostalgia is at the core of Homecoming, the kind of nostalgia that makes you feel gutted and content at the same time. Gutted that a beautiful time of your life has ended for good, content that you have this memory forever.

At a time when we’re starved for soulful, original Indian music, the soundtrack of this film comes as beautiful relief. The performances are not over-the-top and don’t overwhelm you. The characters are played out such that you want to know more about them–about their past that made them the way they are and the kind of people they’re going to be in the future.
In its own way, Homecoming is also a tribute to Kolkata and its poetic, rebellious soul. But don’t think that this is fancy talk for a film that is meant only for people who enjoy artsy cinema or have a connection to the city. Homecoming is truly a feel-good, enjoyable film that lives up to its title. Get your college or school friends together this weekend and watch this film. The evening will most likely turn into one of your most memorable ones.
Homecoming is streaming now on Sony LIV.
