Jewel Thief Review: The story is as bland as it can get
An art collector, Rajan (Jaideep Ahlawat), hires a con artist and thief, Rehan (Saif Ali Khan), to steal the precious red sun diamond. Cop Vikram (Kunal Kapoor) has been chasing Rehan unsuccessfully for years now. He loses Rehan from his grip in some of the most unbelievable ways. Nikita Dutta plays the distressed, abused wife in a forced marriage with Rajan. The theft is risky, especially when no one is playing fair. But the writers somehow end up making it bland, boring and one of the most predictable heist stories ever.
Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins starts strong in a fancy world of power, deception, and money, but soon falls victim to lazy writing. Heist movies are all about twists, turns, and unpredictability, but Saif Ali Khan and Jaideep Ahlawat’s latest movie fails to check even one of these boxes.
What disappoints about Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins?

The story is a victim of unimaginative writing, cliched plots and an insane amount of predictability. You can see the twist coming way before it is even hinted at. Every plot twist is already overdone.
The romantic plot that the makers have introduced is not only unnecessary but also cringeworthy and unimpressive. Nikita Dutta and Saif Ali Khan have no chemistry, and their conversations feel like a rookie romance writer was hired for the job. Additionally, some parts of the movie will remind you of George Clooney’s Ocean’s Twelve. At times, it feels like the makers tried to cover so many themes in the movie that they lost track of what they were actually making. There’s family drama, there’s romance, there’s a heist, and unfortunately, nothing manages to impress. When the movie has stars like Jaideep Ahlawat and Saif Ali Khan, who, along with charisma, also have talent, you expect more. And what’s most disappointing is that even though it’s a treat to watch them, you can’t ignore the plot holes in the script.
What steals the show in Jewel Thief?

The movie creates a believable world where you’d expect people to be ruthless and unfair. Jaideep Ahlawat and Saif Ali Khan, along with the diamond, steal the show. Jaideep Ahalwat, as a violent, rugged businessman, is not only impressive but also a delight to watch. Saif Ali Khan, with his usual charm, makes the perfect thief. He is impressive, believable and also brings a light humour to the movie that’s much appreciated. Kunal Kapoor also impresses with his performance as a frustrated cop trying to chase the thief. Nikita Dutta, on the other hand, has nothing to offer because her role is not only irrelevant but also unnecessary.
Overall, if you have watched enough heist movies or if you are a fan, skip this; you won’t be missing out on anything. But if you just want to enjoy the tension Jaideep and Saif build, go ahead. Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins is now streaming on Netflix.
Can you watch Jewel Thief with your family? The movie has a couple of kissing scenes and a curse word thrown here and there. If that’s alright, you can watch it with your family.
