It’s hard to imagine Lagaan without Aamir Khan, isn’t it? The 2001 epic, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, became not just a milestone in Indian cinema but a global phenomenon, earning an Oscar nomination and a permanent spot in our hearts. But what if we told you that the role of Bhuvan could have looked very, very different? Before Aamir Khan stepped onto the dusty cricket fields of Champaner, the part was offered to a young, fresh-faced Abhishek Bachchan — and he said no.

Why did Abhishek Bachchan say no to Lagaan?

In an interview with The Times of India, Abhishek Bachchan candidly explained his decision: “I was convinced I was not right for the part. I was way too raw and young to shoulder a film as epic as Lagaan. Of course, I knew it was going to be huge. But I was just not ready to be part of it,” Bachchan recalled.
It’s not every day you hear an actor admit they weren’t ready for a role, especially one that ended up becoming iconic. But there’s something incredibly refreshing about Abhishek’s honesty. At a time when he could have been swept away by the glamour and could have agreed to be a part of Lagaan, he chose to listen to his instincts and, frankly, that takes some guts.
On being asked if he would accept the role now, Abhishek Bachchan replied, “I am glad Aamir Khan did Lagaan. He brought so much magic and credibility to the project. Every film and role have their own destiny. Do you know how many actors were offered The Godfather before Marlon Brando?”
What’s even more fascinating is the idea of destiny that Abhishek touches upon. Some roles are simply meant for certain actors. Could another actor have brought the same spirit and fire to Bhuvan’s character? Probably not. It’s easy to view turning down a blockbuster as a missed opportunity. But in Abhishek’s case, it feels more like a moment of rare wisdom. He went on to carve a career that’s uniquely his own, with films like Guru, Yuva, and Manmarziyaan. And as for Lagaan — well, it went on to become one of the most legendary films of India.
