Bollywood has given us all kinds of love stories. From over-the-top romance to dramatic sacrifices, Bollywood-style love had always been a dream for its fans…until the release of Gully Boy. It’s been six years since the film was released. It gave us mind-blowing rap music, memorable dialogues, and a unique love story. Gully Boy is about Murad, a 22-year-old street rapper from Dharavi who struggles to change his fate. While the film inspires people to work for their dreams, it also reevaluates the concept of love through Murad (Ranveer Singh) and Safeena’s (Alia Bhatt) relationship.
Their romance becomes an underrated character in the film. They are not big on grand gestures or violin-backed confessions. Murad and Safeena didn’t give us a dreamy love story but a solid one. And Gen Z needs to take notes from their love story. Here’s how this power couple redefined love.

1. No acting, only love
Safeena gifted her iPad to Murad so he could pursue his passion, without expecting anything in return. When Murad felt guilty, she thanked him for letting her be her crazy, stupid self. Nowadays, when everyone is putting up an act on social media to impress someone, Safeena emphasises the importance of authenticity.
2. Loyalty>>>
We all know commitment is the new fear. But Murad and Safeena were anything but scared of this word. When Murad felt mildly attracted to someone else, he realised it wasn’t worth ruining his relationship. On the other hand, Safeena would fight with anyone who came between them, quite literally. She might be possessive but showed that when she loves, she loves “bohot hard”.
3. Calling out each other’s toxicity
Mixed signals, ghosting, and confused feelings define modern-day love. But Gully Boy‘s Murad and Safeena believed in communication. Murad didn’t appreciate Safeena’s extremely possessive side and her violent behaviour. He called her out and helped her fight her anger issues. Similarly, Safeena told him when he was being a jerk without sugarcoating.
4. Love in the time of hustle
Why is it always ‘choose between love and career’ when you can have both? Murad and Safeena lived with strict families. Safeena wasn’t allowed to do anything beyond her medical practice and college. Murad’s father wanted him to work as a cab driver like he did. But they still took time out for each other while hustling for their goals. They showed how you can love someone without dropping your ambition.
5. Jealous in love, not in ambitions
Indeed, they couldn’t stand anyone eyeing their partner, but they were never jealous of each other’s success. Murad and Safeena gave considerable space to each other to pursue their career. They even did what it took to be successful individually. Furthermore, they showed up to celebrate each other’s wins.
6. Love in public, criticise in private
Correcting your partner in front of everyone can be humiliating for them. Murad and Safeena understood this well. So, they always waited to confront each other in private. Furthermore, whenever they went off track in their respective careers, they gave each other a much-needed reality check (or a deadly stare).
So, do you want what Gully Boy‘s Murad and Safeena had? Or are you still holding on to a Rahul-Anjali kinda romance?
