From adding a creamy zing to stuffed paranthas to becoming your comfort post-meal drink in the form of buttermilk, curd is a summer superstar. And you might think it goes with everything. But it doesn’t. Certain food pairings with curd can mess up digestion, cause allergies, and harm your gut. So, before you mix, match and munch, here are some common food items you must avoid eating with curd.

1. Citrus fruits

According to Ayurveda, eating citrus fruits with curd leads to an imbalance in kapha (mucus or phlegm) and pitta (fire) doshas in the body. The active acid in citrus fruits reacts with the curd’s lactic acid, which increases the body’s heat, leading to skin allergies. Furthermore, the active bacteria in curd feed on the sugars present in the fruits, leading to fermentation. This further increases the bacterial growth in the stomach, which causes indigestion. Also, curd disrupts our body’s metabolism due to the overproduction of mucus. This in turn can trigger cold, cough and sinus blockage. So, you must avoid eating citrus fruits like strawberries, tomatoes, grapes, and oranges with dahi.
2. Fish

The combination of curd and fish is among the most harmful food pairings you must avoid. Since both fish and curd are loaded with protein, their excess can impact your health. A surplus of protein leads to gastrointestinal discomfort, fatigue, dehydration and nausea. While protein might be the hype nutrient these days, it should be consumed in moderation.
3. Milk

Both milk and yoghurt are high in protein, lactose and fats. This combination can cause digestive issues like bloating, gas and diarrhoea. Combining curd and milk can also trigger Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). So, you must avoid foods mixed with curd and milk, like cream cheese, lassi, especially if you’re prone to gastric problems.
4. Tea
You might be thinking what food contains both tea and curd, right? But you might also be familiar with people who love to sip tea after having paranthas with curd for lunch. While this habit looks harmless, it weakens your digestive system in the long run. Furthermore, tannin, a chemical found in tea, interferes with the absorption of nutrients, particularly calcium from curd.
5. Onions

People with a sensitive stomach must avoid eating foods containing onions and curd together. This is because the sulphur compounds present in onions react with the calcium in curd, leading to improper nutrient absorption. Moreover, the heating nature of the onion and the cooling effect of curd can create a conflict in the body’s pitta. This further triggers skin conditions like eczema, rashes, urticaria, and psoriasis.
6. Mangoes

Avoiding foods that have mangoes and curd means saying goodbye to delicious smoothies, mango lassi, mango shrikhand and more. This might have removed some of the most irresistible foods from your summer menu, right? The logic is simple – the heat of the mango reacts to the cooling nature of curd, which leads to indigestion and skin allergies. It’s worse if you’re prone to such conditions, as it creates more toxins in the body. However, we get your cravings for mango in summer. So, you must consume foods mixed with mango and curd in little to moderate amounts if you can’t avoid them completely.
7. Fried foods

We are all familiar with the sluggish feeling after having Chhole Bhature with lassi. It’s hard to sit straight when you simply want to nap. While this is a universal feeling for many, this delicious food combination is considered harmful. This is because of the high amount of fats in fried foods and curd. Consuming such foods regularly will weaken your digestive system over time, causing prolonged bloating and gastric issues.
