It’s been a while since Bollywood came out with a movie that’s just pure, harmless fun, but Crew definitely fits the bill. Directed by Rajesh Krishnan, the movie is headlined by Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kriti Sanon. Crew follows the three women who work as flight attendants at Kohinoor Airlines. When the company stops paying their salaries for months, the women take matters into their own hands. Here’s our review of Crew

Takes off smoothly, but hits turbulence

Crew takes off pretty smoothly. Right off the bat, we see Geeta Sethi (Tabu), Jasmine (Kareena Kapoor Khan) and Divya (Kriti Sanon) being escorted off the flight by the customs teams. From there, we go back into the past to learn about each character’s background. Mrs Sethi, aka Geethu, lives with her husband, Mr Sethi (Kapil Sharma), who comes from an affluent family but was removed from the family business due to a feud with his brother. Jasmine was shipped off to her grandfather when her parents got divorced, and he raised her. She was also a troublemaker in school and used to steal exam papers and sell them to the students. Divya was the school topper and a pro athlete whose goal was to become a pilot. Since she couldn’t get a job as a pilot, she joined Kohinoor Airlines as a flight attendant and hid it from her family.

Geethu, Divya and Jasmine are close friends sailing in the same boat. While Geethu pops pills like candy to deal with her anxiety, Jasmine toes the line between right and wrong, and Divya presents a strong front. All three of them are buried under debt, much like the airline they work for. So, when things go from bad to worse, Geethu, Jasmine and Divya decide to take matters into their own hands and create their own destinies.

When an older fellow flight attendant dies all of a sudden while they are flying, Geethu, Jasmine, and Divya realise that the man was a gold smuggler. And this sparks an idea that turns their lives around. Since salaries aren’t getting credited to their accounts, the three women decide to take a criminal route to earn some money.

Crew starts pretty well, has quite a bit of innuendo and is mostly fun. It hits a turbulent spot right after the interval but picks pace in time for the climax.

Tabu and Kareena Kapoor Khan rule the screen with their performance, and Kriti Sanon is a great addition. The trio have great chemistry and makes the movie watchable even when it drags a bit in the middle. The saddest part though, is that Kapil Sharma as Mr Sethi and Diljit Dosanjh as Customs Officer Jaiveer are underutilised. The two talented actors have barely anything to do, though in the short space, they are on screen, they manage to have fun.

If Kohinoor Airlines and its chairman Vijay Walia (Saswata Chatterjee) remind you of anyone alive or dead, that’s probably not a coincidence. Crew takes the opportunity to deal with Vijay Walia satisfactorily, much like real people would have wanted to.

Can you watch Crew with your family?: There is no sex or nudity in the film, but the characters are liberal with their gaalis. So, if you don’t like swear words, you better sit this out.
