This film features a mind-blowing action hero who sweeps everyone off their feet (literally). His expressions, style, skills, and courage are enough to make people obsessed with him. And this hero is a horse. Directed by Abhishek Kapoor, Azaad marks the debut of Ajay Devgn’s nephew, Aaman Devgan, and Raveena Tandon’s daughter, Rasha Thadani. Who is Azaad?

The movie is set in 1920 when India was ruled by the British and the average citizen was oppressed by the zamindari system. As much as the backdrop sounds like Aamir Khan’s Lagaan (2001), Azaad takes on a unique narrative. Abhishek Kapoor achieves this story through a horse named Azaad. His exceptional beauty carries the plot and other characters have to earn the chance to ride him including, Govind (Aaman Devgan). Being a ‘young stable boy’, Govind is stubborn in his dream to ride a horse. Whenever he tries to do that, Janki’s (Rasha Thadani) upper-class family beats him up for even daring to dream. And at other times, the horse refuses to be tamed by him. Will Govind find his way out?
Should you watch Azaad or skip it?

The movie starts well with Aaman and Rasha’s witty banter. However, it slows down and remains at this pace for a while when it suddenly gallops again. The intriguing story also comes off as a love triangle between Govind, Janki, and Azaad. So, you can take a loo break in between, you won’t miss a thing. The end is worth sitting for another hour as you’ll see some interesting snippets. The movie is packed well with humour, action, and an engaging background score but lacks the much-needed emotional depth. Most of the sentimentality is brought to the screen by the horse who aces the puppy-face expressions.
Furthermore, Ajay Devgn as Vikram Singh is a striking supporting character in the movie. His scenes with Aaman and Azaad add a layer to the movie. Other actors including Piyush Mishra, Diana Penty, and Mohit Malik have also performed well.
How much did the newbies, Aaman Devgan and Rasha Thadani score?

Both the star kids have made a good mark in their debut movie. Their performance is not top-notch but it’s not a disaster either. You can see the raw nature of their acting and it doesn’t feel forced. Nineteen-year-old Rasha Thadani shines in her role as Janki. Her expressions in the song, Uyi Amma instilled excitement in the fans before the release. And the same is carried to the movie. As for Aaman Devgan, his acting shows potential for his upcoming films.
A moment for the third hero of the movie

Abhishek Kapoor might have used the entrancingly beautiful horse, Azaad, as a prop to support the debut faces. But it gracefully proves everyone wrong by coming out as a strong character. All his neighs, laughs and sniffs add to the humour and emotionality. Every minute of Azaad’s screen time is a delight to watch.
Azaad is now in cinemas.
Can you watch it with your family?: Yes. The movie doesn’t contain obscene language or intimacy. It’s perfect for a family watch.
