Haan, haan. I know millennials are the most tortured generation and they have nothing but 90s nostalgia to get them through every day. But this isn’t about you and your existential-cum-midlife crisis, bachche. This is about the bachchas who came after you, the ones who will probably save us from the clutches of evil. Hehehe little bit of exaggeration I know. Gen Z will happily feed us to demons, we are useless to them.

Anyway, I’ve seen a lot of cribbing and cursing about why Gen Z is so entitled and spoilt. But my dear tortured beta ji, have you ever thought that we’re probably just jealous of how confident this generation is? We are not, we are happy to let anyone take the credit for our work in exchange for a pizza party. Gen Z, on the other hand, will shame people in power and call them worthless trash. To their face. While eating that same pizza.

This is why Aunty Eve thinks Gen Z is the best generation yet.

They value comfort over everything

You know those tight-fitting, churidar-style jeans you’ve been trying to fit into for six years? Show them to a Gen Z kid and they will tell you why it’s the most ridiculous piece of clothing ever made. This generation chooses comfort and statements over all else. Show them a fitted designer outfit with a corset and they will burn it. But put them in an oversized sweatshirt with some sort of rebellious message on it and they will make it work. With their signature blank face.

All those short forms!

Life does get easier when we don’t have to type so much. I mean, millennials tried but they came up with pointless short forms like ‘d’ for ‘the’ and ‘u’ for ‘you’. How many seconds did we really save by not typing two alphabets? But look at Gen Z, they shortened entire sentences. Who’s going to angrily type ‘I don’t give a fuck’ when we have IDGAF? Even ISTG? Or the best ever, IYKYK.

Making corporate slavery ew

If you, millennials, are getting chhutti easily or several HR webinars on work-life balance, you have only Gen Z to thank. They pretty much told every corporate boss across the world that they’re not going to make their job their whole life. Like millennials did. Gen Z will clock out at 6-7 pm every day. They’re not going to reply to emails on weekends. And they’re definitely not going to apologise or ‘sincerely thank’ in their leave emails.

Not being polite to everyone just because of their age

Oh ho ho, bachche! This generation does not care about “badon ki izzat” if it has not been earned. And I love it! The other day, Mrs Duggal’s 15-year-old niece, Ayaeanya, was visiting and the kaleshi queen of our colony just happened to pass the house while the little girl was reading in the balcony with her bare legs resting on the railing. Mrs Kaleshwari loudly said, “HAW”…and this girl, without flinching, without looking up, screamed louder with “HELLO HI SONIYE, JAI MATA DI BOLIYE”.

The guts to talk back to parents

This is where I feel bad for millennials who are parents. Pehle you had to bow your head and listen to your parents, now you have to do the same with your Gen Z kids. Bechara bachchas! But you have to agree that it is commendable that these kids don’t care who’s the moron in front of them. They will call out the stupidity, even if it’s coming from their own birth givers.

good things about gen z

Making therapy cool

Millennials provided the problems, Gen Z is giving the solutions. In mental health, at least. Gen X-ers and millennials happily (with tears in their hearts and eyes) dealt with mental health issues passed down by boomers. But Gen Z is making sure this ends here. While we kept doing haw haye about therapy, these kids went and made it cool. From therapy being a secret, everyone’s graduated to talking about their therapists at parties and exchanging numbers of the best ones.

Actually understanding the internet

Gen Z actually, truly understands the internet. Not like Gen X-ers and millennials who will easily lose all their life savings because a fraud link promised them a 90 percent discount on a home loan. Try scamming Gen Z and they’ll probably scam you back. And they don’t waste hours reading about everything happening in the world. It’s called doom-scrolling, bachche. Gen Z gave it a terrible name and basically warned us to stop. But did we listen? No. Will we? I truly hope so.

Gen Z trusts nothing and no one

They want proof. Unlike millennials who trusted everything and everyone and are now paying for it. Imagine actually believing that vaping is good for you. Uff. The self-devastation with millennials is just mindblowing.

These kids can watch the world burn…and smirk

And we can’t blame them, can we? Climate change, wars, a pandemic, recession—matlab this is too much tragedy even for Anupamaa. But Gen Z is coping, they’re coping with oversized clothing and smirks.

Beta ji, whether you like it or not, we needed a generation like Gen Z to fix the world. Save us, kids. But also, don’t be cocky about it. Badon ki izzat applies to me, okay?
