Netflix’s new miniseries Adolescence has been in the news in India and for all the right reasons. While the series’ focus on the impact of toxic masculinity on young boys is all too real, the fact that each episode of the series is shot in a single take is garnering praise for the cast and crew. But do you know India already has this achievement in its pocket? And I’m sure you have watched it too.
I’m talking about CID. Yes, Sony TV’s CID shot an episode in a single, seamless take two decades before Adolescence. Back in 2004, the makers of CID decided to do something unprecedented and amazing: they shot a 111-minute episode in a single take. And in the process of doing this, the makers of CID managed to set a Guinness World Record.
How was the CID episode shot?

This 111-minute episode aired on November 7, 2004, under the title The Inheritance. The episode was officially recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest continuous shot in a TV show.
In a podcast last year, Aditya Srivastava (Abhijeet) and Dayanand Shetty (Daya) shared their experience of filming this episode. The entire team spent five days rehearsing all the lines and scenes to make sure nothing went wrong. The actors shared that the biggest challenge was carrying a 37-kilo body cam that had to be moving around with the actors. While the filming was tough, the entire team did it smoothly.
While CID’s 111-minute episode might not have been a masterclass in storytelling like Netflix’s Adolescence, we can’t deny the effort they put in. And honestly, even if it was far from perfect, we still love the dramatic flair CID added to our childhood.
