Based on the classic Run Lola Run, Looop Lapeta stars Taapsee Pannu and Tahir Raj Bhasin in the lead roles and is directed by Aakash Bhatia. Unlike other remakes, Looop Lapeta doesn’t shy away from being one and pays clever tributes to the original. You just have to watch for them.

The film starts with a completely messed up couple, Savi (Taapsee Pannu) and Satya (Tahir Raj Bhasin), trying to get their life together. Savi is a former athlete who is forced to give up her career because of an injury and now wants to live a peaceful life with recreational drugs and her boyfriend. Satya is a gambler who is always looking for quick and not necessarily legal or safe ways to get rich. When Savi discovers she’s pregnant, Satya lays another, more immediate crisis on her head after he loses 50 lakhs of his dangerous boss Victor’s money. Now, Savi takes it upon herself to save her boyfriend and somehow arrange a huge amount of money in a short period of time.

The dark tone of Looop Lapeta is established from the opening credits. The film moves at a dizzying pace, so if you take your eyes off to scroll on your phone, you will lose track of what’s happening. But that doesn’t mean that it grips your attention constantly. You will have to make an effort to focus on the film because of the lack of cohesion. Several stories collide, and while everything is happening simultaneously, Savi is sprinting across town with a cop on her tail. Don’t try to figure out where she’s going, just watch and let it serve as a reminder to get your cardio in.

About halfway through, however, the story takes an interesting twist. And this is when the so-far kind of bored viewer will probably sit up and pay attention. Looop Lapeta is not for everyone and we don’t think it was intended to be a complete crowd-pleaser. If you like dark humour, this film may appeal to you. As it progresses, it redeems itself somewhat but Looop Lapeta is far too long for the story it wants to tell. About 20-30 minutes of the film could have easily been chopped off.

Shreya Dhanwanthary makes an impressive cameo as Julia, a bride wondering if she should marry the good boy or run away with the boyfriend. Even in a short role, Dhanwanthary’s performance makes her memorable. Tahir Raj Bhasin has established that he’s here to stay. His performance in Looop Lapeta or Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein before this may not be memorable but he does show promise as an actor. We can only wait for what he pulls out of his hat next. Among the more entertaining characters of the movie are Appu (Manik Papneja) and Gappu (Raghav Raj Kakker) who entertain in every moment they have on-screen.

Looop Lapeta is good as a one-time watch, just don’t expect to have your mind blown. Stream it now on Netflix.
