Most couples plan a destination wedding around the big numbers: venue, catering, outfits, transport. A lot of couples don’t realise that several states in India have restrictions or extra licensing requirements around serving alcohol at private events. Some states are technically dry, while others require specific permits for weddings. This can mean paying an additional liquor permit fee on top of whatever you’re already spending on the bar.

Even in states without such restrictions, resorts and hotels often charge a corkage fee if you bring your own alcohol instead of purchasing it through them. These corkage fees can be steep enough to significantly increase your bar budget if you haven’t planned for them.

Drone and photography permits

A lot of couples now want drone shots of the baraat or the mandap, especially at palace or heritage properties. But drone usage in India is regulated by the DGCA, and certain areas, particularly near forts, require special permits or forbid drones. Your photography team may charge separately for arranging this permit. You need to confirm these requirements and charges with your photography vendor well before you’ve promised guests an aerial reel.

Power backup and generator charges

Outdoor lawns, havelis, and palace properties, especially in smaller towns, aren’t always on the most reliable grid, and a power cut during the sangeet or reception is not something anyone wants to deal with. Venues typically offer diesel generator backups as an add-on rather than something built into the base package, and for a wedding running heavy lighting, a live band, and a stage setup, this generator backup cost can be a meaningful chunk of the final bill that nobody mentions until the contract’s already signed.

Multiple outfit changes and on-site pressing or steaming

Most brides and grooms change outfits at least three or four times across mehendi, sangeet, and the wedding day, and each outfit needs pressing or steaming fresh on the day, which resorts either charge for as a laundry service or which requires bringing in a dedicated person to handle it. Currency conversion and forex charges for international venues

If you’ve picked somewhere like Bali, Phuket, or Dubai instead of a domestic location, this one catches people out constantly. Paying vendors in dollars or in any other currency while your account is in rupees means every single transfer costs you in exchange rate margins, forex conversion charges, and LRS-related paperwork under the RBI’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme. Over the course of paying deposits, final balances, and last-minute top-ups, this can cost lakhs rather than a few thousand rupees. It’s important to talk to your bank about forex cards or using a service that offers better conversion rates than the standard markup, so you’re not losing money every time you pay a vendor abroad.

Legal paperwork and marriage registration fees

Loads of couples assume that once the pheras are done or the ceremony is over, they’re legally married. If you’re marrying abroad, plenty of countries make it deliberately tricky for foreign nationals to register a marriage on their soil within a short trip, which is why many couples do the legal registration back home, either just before or just after the destination event, and treat the big function as the celebratory part. That registration involves its own fees, affidavits, witness arrangements, and sometimes a lawyer’s time if either partner is an NRI or has a foreign passport. None of this is expensive individually, but it’s rarely factored into the destination wedding budget because people assume it’s somehow bundled into the venue package. It isn’t.

Shipping, customs duties, and GST on out-of-state vendors

If you’re sending anything ahead like decor pieces, welcome hampers, favours, even outfits ordered from a designer in a different city, freight and courier charges add up fast. If your venue is in another state, you may find differences in GST depending on whether vendors bill you from their home state or the venue’s state. If you’ve gone international, customs duties apply on anything shipped ahead, and couples have been stung with unexpected import taxes that nobody warned them about.
