This is not the first time you’ve heard the words ‘gut health’, ‘probiotics’, or ‘constipation’ in the last 24 hours, right? Well, the wellness industry has started treating gut health as a buzzword. People have even made drinking kombucha a personality trait, and everyone on the internet has advice on how to get rid of bloating. But how much of this is just aesthetic wellness content and how much of it is actual science? Before you get convinced by another IG ad on gut supplements, you need to read this. Here are some of the most popular gut health myths that you need to stop believing because they might be making things worse.

1. “Pooping every day is a sign of a healthy gut”

If the internet has convinced you that pooping once a day is a sign of a healthy gut, join the club. Stressing about your bowel movement the minute you finish a meal is actually quite unhealthy. Your gut is not facing a crisis if you haven’t pooped in 24 hours. Everyone has different digestive systems, and bowel movements can vary from person to person. According to the Cleveland Clinic, someone with a healthy gut can go anywhere between three times a day to a few times a week. So, stop panicking if your morning detox didn’t arrive on time. But if you’re straining, are in pain, or are feeling constant discomfort, you might need to go see a doctor.

2. “Spicy food is the villain!”

One of the most popular gut health myths is that eating spicy food is bad for you and leads to long-term digestive issues. Spicy food has been painted as a villain for years, and if you’ve feared going overboard with some chilli flakes, you need to calm down. There are other things, like your weekend alcohol binge, that do your gut more harm than a dash of Tabasco sauce in your dinner. While spicy food may cause slight discomfort, acid reflux, or even IBS for people with sensitive guts, it isn’t actually bad for your gut. In fact, ingredients like chilli peppers contain compounds like capsaicin that support metabolism and gut diversity. It is all about maintaining a balance and knowing what your body can tolerate. One spicy ramen session won’t hurt you, but constantly eating meals that humble your spice tolerance will definitely mess your shit up, quite literally.

3. “All fermented foods support gut health”

Drinking kombucha and surviving on kefir might make you think your gut health is sorted, but that’s not true. Sure, fermented foods are great for the gut, but they are not magical cure-alls. A lot of packaged food and drinks contain excess sugar and other acids that could irritate sensitive stomachs. While fermented foods support gut diversity, having kimchi salad for one meal won’t turn you into a wellness god. The real magic lies in consistency and balance rather than having superfoods once in a while.

4. “Bloating is a sign of an unfit gut”

Can we all stop treating occasional bloating like a medical emergency? Another popular gut health myth says that bloating is a sign of an unfit gut. Do you really think eating a wholesome bowl of pasta and getting slightly bloated has ruined your gut? Bloating is completely normal and can happen due to overeating, dehydration, stress, hormonal imbalance, or consuming excess fibre. If you’re facing bloating that feels really painful or has been persistent for a few days, you might need to visit your doctor. It could be a sign of digestive conditions like food intolerance, lactose intolerance, or irritable bowel syndrome. But other than that, don’t panic just because you’re feeling too full after a big meal.

5. “Your gut needs detoxes and cleanses to reset”

The wellness industry loves making people think that their bodies are full of toxins and need colon cleanses and complicated detoxes to fix the problem. Well, detoxing is a great and healthy concept, but do you really need to start a juice cleanse or some Instagram-approved fasting routine to flush out toxins? Per the Mayo Clinic, you don’t need colon cleanses or detoxing and they aren’t usually recommended or needed for any medical condition. Your liver, kidneys, and digestive system are literally doing the job for free and keeping your body healthy and safe. Good gut health comes from having a decent lifestyle, balanced eating, hydration, and the right balance of fibre and protein. A liquid diet for three days won’t fix the problem; it will only leave you emotionally attached to soup. So, skip the aggressive detoxes, as they might harm your gut bacteria balance and make things worse.

6. “Carbs are bad for your gut health”

Diet culture and internet myths have really done a number on carbohydrates, one of the most important energy sources for the body, especially the brain. Eating a little bread, potatoes, and seasonal fruit isn’t a criminal offence. According to Healthline, healthy carbs like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, beans, and legumes are minimally processed and are actually good for your gut health. What you need to avoid are ultra-processed, fried, and refined carbs because completely cutting carbs actually harms your microbiome. The key is balance and unlearning that every carb is a villain.
