I love makeup, but I live for the “Wow, your skin looks amazing” compliment rather than someone appreciating my makeup skills. It is what it is. But it is a task, right? To nail a no-makeup makeup look, especially in summer when you know the product will melt the moment you’re out in the sun or humidity. That’s what I used to think as well, until I started following these five tips to apply foundation to get a natural, sweatproof makeup look.
1. Do a quick face massage before applying makeup

Before you even think about foundation, take a minute to wake your skin up. You can dunk your face in ice water before massaging it. But if you catch a cold easily, skip the ice water step and pick up your gua sha, or just use your fingers to do the same trick. Gently massage in upward and outward motions starting from the centre of your face toward your hairline and jaw. Focus on areas like the cheeks, jaw, and under eyes to boost circulation and reduce puffiness. This not only smoothens uneven texture but also helps your foundation glide on evenly and look like your second skin.
2. Match your foundation to the chest complexion
Ever applied foundation on your face that looked perfect in the mirror, but completely off once you stepped out? It’s because your face and body aren’t always the same shade. When you’re exposed to more light, the makeup on your face and your body’s natural tone look mismatched. Instead of matching only to your face, take your chest and neck into account while choosing your foundation shade.
3. Use a tinted setting powder

If your foundation looks a little flat or too matte with a white cast, it’s probably because you’re using a translucent setting powder. Swap translucent formulas for a lightly tinted setting powder that blends into your skin tone instead of sitting on top. It helps maintain the depth and warmth of your base while locking it in place. The result is a finish that looks more natural, less chalky, and a lot more like real skin.
4. Apply the foundation around breakouts, not on them first
Do you feel tempted to pile foundation on your acne after using colour correctors? It’s normal and completely valid to hide those annoying spots so they don’t steal your limelight. But did you know when you apply foundation on your pimples, it highlights them more? When you layer foundation directly on top, it builds up, clings to texture, and creates a thick patch that catches light differently. The trick to preventing this is to apply foundation to the area first, then use whatever’s left on your brush or sponge to lightly tap it over the acne area. This keeps the coverage thin, so it blends in rather than drawing attention.
5. Use the two-shade trick

Your face isn’t one flat colour, so why should your foundation be? Using just one shade all over can make your base look a little too uniform, which can make it seem like you’ve done too much. Real skin has natural variations in tone across different areas of the face. Try using a shade close to your natural skin around the centre of your face and a slightly darker tone on the outer areas. It subtly adds dimension, so your base looks more like skin and less like a single tone layer.
