Detective Sherdil movie review: The plot

The action begins in Budapest when a billionaire businessman, Pankaj Bhatti (Boman Irani), is murdered under suspicious circumstances. Soon, the investigation begins, led by Sherdil (Diljit Dosanjh), who is joined by Natasha (Diana Penty). Everyone is a suspect: Bhatti’s wife, Rajeshwari (Ratna Pathak Shah); his deaf and mute daughter, Shanti (Banita Sandhu); and his son, Angad (Sumit Vyas). As the investigation continues, all fingers point to Shanti’s boyfriend Purvak (Arjun Tanwar), who, unlike the Bhattis, is a common man and has all the reasons to kill Mr Bhatti. For starters, Mr Bhatti made him a beneficiary of 80 per cent of his property, and questioning quickly reveals that Purvak hired a killer named Luca to shoot Mr Bhatti. While Luca is caught within 24 hours, Purvak is on the run, and this is not where the story ends; it’s where it begins.
What we didn’t love
The movie introduces Sherdil in a sort of caricaturish tone with a short fight sequence that’s ridiculously unbelievable. That almost makes you want to give up, but thankfully, the movie eventually picks up the pace. Making an entry with, “Goron ke liye mein hoon Sherlock, desiyon ke liye Byomkesh”, Sherdil gets our hopes up.
The movie is a mix of guessing the next move and making you wonder. Sherdil has a laid-back kind of charm that seems annoying at times but also makes the movie entertaining. Talking about the plot, there’s nothing jaw-dropping, but it’s also not painfully predictable. If you are expecting a nail-biting mystery, you’ll be disappointed, but if you’re looking for a light watch with some comedy and Bollywood masala, your weekend is sorted.
What we loved about Detective Sherdil

What works for the movie is that right from the beginning, you know what’s coming next. Sherdil isn’t your usual detective; he’s fun, sarcastic, and humorous, and that’s exactly what makes the movie stand out. With a balance of humour and mystery, the movie keeps the audience entertained without a dull moment. The story stays crisp and engaging and is visually appealing at all times.
Talking about the cast, Diljit Dosanjh’s character Sherdil actually matches his vibrant personality, making him pull it off effortlessly. Veteran actors like Ratna Pathak Shah and Boman Irani are true to their characters and are a delight to watch. Banita Sandhu, without any dialogue, also manages to impress, and so does Sumit Vyas with his believable performance. Even with limited screen time, Chunky Panday, with his character of a calm gardener, adds to the movie. Lastly, Diana Penty as Natasha seems quite mechanical with no emotions whatsoever.
Can you watch Detective Sherdil with your family? Yes, there are no intimate scenes or use of abusive language.
That’s all for the Detective Sherdil movie review, which is now streaming on Zee5.
