If you thought love was complicated, you probably haven’t met Joe Goldberg, the internet’s favourite yet scariest hopeless romantic. His idea of love is mixed with obsession, manipulation and relentless killing. The character is effortlessly played by the actor Penn Badgley in the crime thriller series, You. The Netflix web series is a murder mystery centred on Joe’s life and his never-ending love interests. The show is now returning, for the last time, to give us closure on Joe’s chapter. But do you remember what happened previously on You?

You series recap: Everything that’s happened so far

The You series’ finale calls for a quick recap of the previous seasons. So, let’s rewind a bit before diving into You S5. Here’s what happened so far in You S1 to S4.

You Season 1 recap: Guy meets girl, loves her and eventually kills her

We meet Joe Goldberg, a charming bookstore manager who falls in love at first sight with Guinevere Beck, an aspiring writer. The meet-cute slowly turns into Joe’s obsession. He stalks Beck online and spies on her in real life. Beck is dating Benjamin, who is a total jerk. When Joe finds out, he decides to be the knight in shining armour to protect Beck. And Joe being Joe, he kills her friends, ex-boyfriend and anyone who threatens her sanity.

The two start to date and grow closer than ever. However, Joe is infuriated to know that Beck is secretly seeing her therapist, Dr Nicky. He decides to collect the evidence before killing him. He lets go of her until she returns and confesses her feelings for Joe. Romance catches them off guard again until Beck learns about Joe’s ex-girlfriend, Candace, who is allegedly missing. When she learns about Joe’s mysterious past, things turn ugly, and Joe kills Beck to save himself.

You Season 2 recap: New city, new girl, same Joe

The second season of the You series begins with Joe moving on from his chilling past like it’s another Tuesday. He escapes to Los Angeles to start afresh with a new name, Will Bettelheim. Joe vows to stay away from love, but surprise, surprise, the fanatic lover boy falls for someone yet again. Enter Love Quinn, aka Joe’s next obsession. This time, he decides to be a better man. However, old habits die hard. More stalking, more lies and perfectly executed murders follow until the plot complicates. It turns out Joe has found his soulmate, as Love Quinn is just as messed up as he is, or maybe even more.

Joe gets to know that she has been stalking him ever since they met. Furthermore, he learns about her dark past. She killed her childhood nanny and her first husband. When they find that Joe’s victim, Candace, is alive, she kills her to protect him. When Joe thinks of leaving Quinn, she drops the news of her pregnancy. And so, they decide to move in together.

You Season 3 recap: Marriage, parenthood and more murders

After a series of being ‘mad’ in love, Joe has officially entered fatherhood with baby Henry. Two weeks into the new house, he is love-struck by his next-door neighbour, Natalie. On the other hand, Quinn has developed anger issues. The newbie parents have tossed their love life out the window. They are now playing secrets and revenge against each other. Attracted by Natalie but distanced by her husband, Matthew, Joe tries to spark things up between him and Quinn after ages. But Quinn soon discovers the reason behind his reignited passion towards her. She kills Natalie before Joe becomes completely obsessed with her.

Joe and Quinn go for couples therapy to reconnect. Meanwhile, the whole neighbourhood goes into a frenzy with Natalie’s sudden disappearance, leaving Joe and Quinn paranoid. Joe then finds out about Quinn’s extramarital affair with Theo. It all leads to a crazy season finale where Quinn decides to kill Joe. However, her plan backfires, and Joe kills her instead. The season ends with him leaving Henry with a safe family. He then fakes his own death and moves to Paris to keep an eye on another woman, Marienne.

You Season 4 recap: Love and murder follow again

Joe rebrands himself again as Professor Jonathan Moore. He diligently works and returns home without getting involved in love and crime. But fate traps him in the loop again. A mysterious killer, aka Rhys Montrose, targets Joe and his wealthy friends. Meanwhile, Joe reconnects with Marienne, but things go haywire between them. In a shocking turn of events, it is revealed that Joe is Rhys, the killer. He’s so deep in denial that he creates an alternate personality on whom he can blame the murders.

By the end of You S4, Joe admits his sins. He is in love with his new girlfriend, Kate. He comes out clean to her and reveals everything about his past victims, lies and stalking. Joe accepts his unhinged nature and decides to become a better man. To execute his plan, he moves to New York with his original name, his new beloved, Kate and his old sinister smile. What is he cooking in the last season of the crime thriller series?
