Another Christmas release today meant another movie to review for me! This one, however, tickles the inner child unlike Coolie No 1 which I reviewed earlier today. I’m talking about the latest release on Netflix — We Can Be Heroes. Starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas, YaYa Gosselin, Pedro Pascal, and several other actors, this film is about a bunch of kids who find themselves in an unusual situation. The aliens have kidnapped their superhero parents, and now it’s up to the tweens to save the world. Should you invest 100 minutes of your life in watching this film? Read this review to find out.

Fallen superheroes bring kids to the forefront

The film begins with Miracle Guy shooting up in space to realise that the planet is about to be attacked by aliens. To fight the invaders off, the leader of the Heroics HQ, Ms Granada (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) gets the President to order a superhero attack. Things, however, don’t go as planned and the superheroes end up being taken hostage by the aliens. Meanwhile, their kids who were locked under Ms Granada’s supervision for safety, manage to break out and take matters into their own hands. Using their superpowers, the kids then plan to rescue their parents and save the world.

Directed by Robert Rodriguez, We Can Be Heroes isn’t exactly a sequel to his 2005 film, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl. However, it does take on a story in the future with their daughter, Guppy, now in the picture as one of the super kids. While TASL ended up being a massive flop, We Can Be Heroes isn’t as bad. What you need to remember is that the film is made for ages seven and up. It is essentially a film for primary school children with a few moral lessons on teamwork and believing in oneself.

When one speaks of performances, Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ portrayal of Ms Granada does annoy a bit. Her expressions and dialogue delivery would make you think of a crossover between Professor Umbridge and Tinkerbell. Disturbing, right? But then again, you remind yourself of the target audience and it all seems to fit well. Plus, by the end of the film, you kind of understand the reason behind her character’s animated behaviour.

We Can Be Heroes — Final verdict

So, should you watch We Can Be Heroes?

If you have kids at home who have been bawling their eyes out over this lockdown, then sure. This movie can be a decent 100-minute pacifier. However, I wouldn’t recommend it as a must-watch for adults. For you big boys and girls, here’s the AAE recommendation — Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors.
