Oh ho, beta ji. In the crowd of royal this and royal that all of last week, I toh needed a break. A break from the regular OTT shows flooding our Instagram. Aadha show toh reels mein hi dekh lete hain because you bachchas share so much of anything that features Bollywood actors. In all of that noise, I found a sweet, unique web series that will feel like home for 90s kids. One of the best new shows to watch with family. This series is called Very Parivarik by TVF and is streaming on YouTube.

Here’s why Very Parivarik is Aunty Eve’s favourite series these days.

Turns the saas-bahu stereotype on its head

I’m kinda done with watching saas-bahu kalesh on TV. Real life mein itna hai, who wants to watch it for entertainment? In the saas-bahu genre, reality is very much stranger than fiction, bachche. Very Parivarik doesn’t fall into this stereotype. Instead, the bahu, Shelly, and saas, Shakuntala, get along quite well despite their differences. Shelly suggests that her in-laws move in with her and Anish, her husband, because she needs kalesh for content. Creator hai na bechari. But when the in-laws do move in, she doesn’t get any kalesh at all because Shakuntala is just a happy soul. Shelly whines to her MIL and tells her off like she’s her own mother. Shakuntala keeps cheering Shelly in tough times and listens to her like she would listen to her own child. So refreshing to see an angel in a sea of monsters-in-law.

Vibes of Sunday morning TV shows from the 90s: Truly Very Parivarik

Remember those 30-minute shows that would come on TV every Sunday morning and were mandatory viewing for the whole family? The ones you watched after breakfast and just before your mid-morning nap? Oh ho, soch ke hi thand pai gayi, bachche. This series is like one of those shows in its look and feel. Every episode is a new kalesh but a very gentle kalesh, not the kind to make you cringe and wince and get all tensed up thinking about what might happen next.

Shows a family taking the woman’s career seriously

That too a creative career! Poori family lagi hui hai to make Shelly’s big break happen. In the process, they make massive errors also but no one is plotting against her or telling her to stop working and have kids. Her husband doesn’t have an existential crisis triggered by his wife’s career. On the contrary, when Shakuntala gets a job, Shelly encourages her and even drives her to work. And when Shakuntala realises that her self-care is more important, she quits. Goals for Gen Z corporate majdoors.

Very Parivarik Season 2 is streaming now with new episodes every week, so start watching. Tell me how much you love this series, beta ji. Because I know you will.
