Have you also been gifted a beautiful lucky bamboo plant? Or are you planning to gift it to someone? Whether it’s someone’s housewarming party, wedding anniversary, or an office celebration, gifting lucky bamboo plants has become a tradition. And for good reason. Whoever receives this plant attracts wealth, health, prosperity, and, obviously, luck. But is it really so? According to Vastu Shastra, the lucky bamboo plant can bring you luck only when you place it in the right direction and care for it in a specific manner.

We asked Vastu consultant Richa Pathak about the benefits and placement of the lucky bamboo plant in your home. Here’s what she says.

Does the lucky bamboo plant really work, or is it just superstition?

According to Richa, a plant begins to work only when you care for it with awareness. “Lucky bamboo is not about superstition. It is about energy, intention, and balance,” Richa says. In Vastu Shastra, the lucky bamboo plant symbolises slow, steady, and natural growth. “It belongs to the wood element, which in Vastu is connected to health, healing, and forward movement in life,” Richa says. You will notice how its stalks always grow upwards; never sideways or down. And that’s why Richa suggests keeping a lucky bamboo plant in your home and office. If you’re feeling stuck, stressed, or emotionally drained, having a lucky bamboo around you will slowly improve your life. Does lucky bamboo also protect against negativity or nazar?

No, it doesn’t fight negative energy; it balances it. “The lucky bamboo plant absorbs emotional heaviness, softens sharp vibrations, and creates a gentle protective layer in the space,” Richa says. That’s why you often feel calmer in rooms where healthy plants are kept.

Vastu-approved ideal directions to place the lucky bamboo plant

Richa suggests placing the lucky bamboo in the East or Southeast to balance the energy of your home. “In Vastu, the East supports health and harmony, while the Southeast is linked to prosperity and growth,” Richa says. In offices, you can place the lucky bamboo near your work desk, reception area, or in the East or North to bring a sense of calm and focus. But where does the lucky bamboo thrive the most, indoors or outdoors?

Indoors is always better than outdoors, as the lucky bamboo plant loves stability. “Too much exposure to harsh sunlight or weather can disturb both the plant and the energy it carries,” Richa explains. Apart from the placement, many of us also wonder how many stalks of the bamboo plant are considered lucky.

What Vastu says about the number of stalks of the lucky bamboo plant

According to Richa, the number of stalks does matter, but you don’t have to follow it so rigidly. The Vastu expert has noticed that people naturally gravitate toward certain numbers because they resonate with what they need. Here’s what Richa says about the number of stalks:

  • Two stalks bring warmth to your relationships.
  • Three stalks bring a sense of happiness and flow into your life.
  • Five stalks create balance in your life, both in relationships and in your career.
  • Six or eight stalks bring financial stability into your life.

Richa warns against keeping a four-stalked bamboo plant, as it is considered unlucky in Vastu. But besides that, you should let your intuition guide you more than the count. You must also keep the plant healthy enough so it blesses you with good fortune.

How to take care of the lucky bamboo plant

Richa suggests keeping the water clean and changing it regularly. If you keep the lucky bamboo plant in soil, keep it moist enough without waterlogging. When a stalk turns yellow, remove it carefully to keep the plant healthy.

“Talk to the plant once in a while, as good intentions travel faster than any ritual you perform for the plant,” Richa suggests. More than the stalk count, the pot, colour and placement height of the lucky bamboo matter.

According to Richa, the pot you place the lucky bamboo in influences its energy. “Glass pots feel light and clear. Ceramic pots feel grounded and stable,” the Vastu expert says. Avoid placing the lucky bamboo in metal containers as they disrupt the plant’s positive energy. If growing the plant in soil, avoid pots without drainage. Don’t use large, oversized pots for the lucky bamboo plant, as they can weaken its growth and energy.

For the pot colours of the lucky bamboo, Richa suggests choosing green, white, light blue, or earthy shades. She warns against using red or black containers as they are associated with heaviness and stagnant energy. The colour red represents the fire element in Vastu Shastra, which can overpower the calm, growth-oriented energy of the lucky bamboo.

In terms of the placement height, Richa recommends keeping the lucky bamboo plant at table height or slightly elevated. Growth should rise, not sink. She suggests avoiding placing the lucky bamboo plant directly on the floor or in bathrooms. This can interfere with the plant’s auspicious properties, blocking happiness and good fortune.
