Let’s get straight to the point, The Big Bull is terrible. Even if you haven’t seen the masterpiece that is Scam 1992, you will be disappointed. And if you have seen the series, The Big Bull will feel like a rushed, badly made copy of Scam 1992.
Abhishek Bachchan is the Robinhood of the stock market, a broker who wants to take money from the industrialists and give it to the middle class while getting rich himself. Eventually, he tries to become the Singham of the stock market and that, my friend, is a journey!
On the backs of terrible research and graphics that feel like they’re mocking the audience, Hemant Shah takes us on a ride that is 2 hours too long.
Directed and co-written by Kookie Gulati and produced by Ajay Devgn, the movie hardly ever holds your attention. The story doesn’t rope you in to the world of finance and corruption. There is not a single character who you will root for or passionately hate, they make you feel absolutely nothing. And obviously, when you see stalwarts like Supriya Pathak and Saurabh Shukla criminally underused, you lose any little hope you may have had in the story.
Hemant Shah sounds and looks like a terrible copy of Harshad Mehta. We’re constantly subjected to 90s style over the top acting, complete with the evil laugh and corny dialogues that are supposed to make you go “Ooooooh” but manage just an “Ugh”. Meera Rao (Ileana D’Cruz) does nothing to make you believe that she is a senior journalist at a credible publication. Her character is overly simplistic and offers no insight into how a scam as big as this affected the journalist personally.
Towards the end, one can tell that the purpose of The Big Bull is to make Harshad Mehta a hero and to make the viewer empathise with him. At a time when Indian audiences are demanding and appreciating good stories and great performances, this movie sticks out like a sore thumb. It’s the biggest scam on our screens right now. Literally.
PS: Ileana D’Cruz really needed a better wig with greys. That hair was the first indication of the thoughtlessness behind the making of this movie.
The Big Bull is streaming now on Disney+ Hotstar.
