Potterheads, unite! It’s the 20th anniversary of the movie Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Can I just say, OMG!!! My inner Potterhead is jumping with joy thinking back to the glorious days I spent at Hogwarts with Harry, Hermione, Ron, and the rest of the gang. Somebody bring me a time-turner and let me go back. While we can no longer watch the movie for the first time, we can reminisce about it and look back at our favourite moments. Here’s a trip down memory lane to relive some of the best moments in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
1. The Birthday Cake
From the beginning of the movie, we were all rooting for Harry to get away from the Dursleys. The dream begins to come true when Hagrid crashes through the door of the hut. Harry’s first friend in the wizarding world, Hagrid comes bearing gifts. More like a birthday cake. We could feel the same joy Harry felt when he received his first birthday cake.
2. The Wand
All witches and wizards need their wands. Harry walking into Ollivander’s to get his first wand was as exciting for the audience as it was for Harry. As he tries different wands, we would sit up in anticipation as to which wand will choose Harry. Ultimately, his holly and phoenix feather wand brings with it a foreboding of things to come.
3. The Sorting Hat
By now, Harry already knew he did not want to be in Slytherin, especially since He Who Must Not Be Named was also in Slytherin. We too were wondering where the sorting hat would place Harry. Much to the joy of Harry and the audience, he ends up in Gryffindor.
4. The Remembrall
Everyone including Harry knew that he wasn’t all that great at studying. Poor guy thought he wasn’t good at anything. Then, he met a broom, and bang, we all found a natural flyer. Thanks to Neville’s Remembrall that Draco took, all of us and Professor McGonagall found a seeker for the Gryffindor Quidditch team.
5. Nimbus 2000
As an orphan living with his obnoxious relatives, everyone knew Harry won’t be getting any gifts from anyone, especially the expensive kind. But he’s the hero, not just of the movie, but also the Quidditch team. And the MVP needs the best-in-class equipment. Enter Professor McGonagall with a brand-new Nimbus 2000 that has everyone going gaga.
6. The Troll in The Dungeon
In between mocking Hermione for her “It’s leviOsa, not levioSAR!” and saving her from a troll, Harry, Ron and Hermione became best friends. Those who read the book before watching the movie were waiting for the trio to become BFFs. Watching it happen on screen was just as heart-warming.
7. The One Where Neville Is the Hero
“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to your enemies. But a great deal more to stand up to your friends”, as Dumbledore said. And Neville was a true friend to our adventure-seeking trio. He knew he wasn’t really a match; he was a little intimidated. Yet, Neville tried to stop Harry, Ron, and Hermione from seeking their adventures in the middle of the night.
