Ever since the month of September started, most of us went back to the clichéd jokes of the Green Day song Wake Me Up When September Ends. But let’s be honest — this entire year has been putting us in that mood where it feels like a neverending nightmare. It’s not just September that made us slip into a depressive state, but pretty much every month since March 2020. Now September is ending, so people who asked to be woken up can finally wake up. For the rest of us, we’ve compiled a list of songs that describe 2020. So, gather around folks, it’s time to get used to some new tunes cuz issa vibe!

1. Pajamas, Gnash

“Let’s watch TV with the sound off
‘Cause the news is always bad
Let’s be immature and ignorant
‘Cause I don’t feel like being sad
I wonder if the last generation was better
I wonder if the next one’s going to hell”

2. Don’t Stand So Close to Me, The Police

“It’s no use, he sees her
He starts to shake and cough
Just like the old man in
That book by Nabakov
Don’t stand, don’t stand so
Don’t stand so close to me”

3. You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch), Bruce Springsteen

“You can look but you better not touch boy
You can look but you better not touch boy
Mess around and you’ll end up in dutch boy
You can look but you better not, no you better not, no you better not touch”

4. The Lazy Song, Bruno Mars

“Today I don’t feel like doing anything
I just wanna lay in my bed
Don’t feel like picking up my phone
So leave a message at the tone
‘Cause today I swear I’m not doing anything”

5. It’s the End of the World As We Know It, R.E.M

“Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn
World serves its own needs
Don’t mis-serve your own needs
Speed it up a notch, speed, grunt, no, strength
The ladder starts to clatter
With a fear of height, down, height
Wire in a fire, represent the seven games
And a government for hire and a combat site
Left her, wasn’t coming in a hurry
With the Furies breathing down your neck”

6. Jesus Take The Wheel, Carrie Underwood

“Jesus, take the wheel
Take it from my hands
‘Cause I can’t do this on my own
I’m letting go
So give me one more chance
And save me from this road I’m on
Jesus, take the wheel”

7. I Want To Break Free, Queen

“I don’t want to live alone, hey
God knows, got to make it on my own
So baby can’t you see
I’ve got to break free”

8. Eve of Destruction, Barry McGuire

“The eastern world, it is explodin’,
Violence flarin’, bullets loadin’,
You’re old enough to kill but not for votin’,
You don’t believe in war, but what’s that gun you’re totin’,
And even the Jordan River has bodies floatin’,
But you tell me over and over and over again my friend,
Ah, you don’t believe we’re on the eve of destruction”

9. It’s Gonna Get Better, Sam Martin

“Hold on, the good days are coming, coming
It’s gonna get better for you
You’ll look back, you’ll forget the pain
It’s gonna get better for you
Watch it all just wash away”

10. Lock Me Up, The Chalkeaters

“And while we hide, blood flies might swarm the city spreading
The Tyrant virus outside, trust me, I’ve already seen that
Think I should move to Greenland
So lick me barnacle, hug me, my buddy head crab
I’m safe and sound hanging ’round with my City Seventeen friends
Till the quarantine ends
I’ll stay home the whole spring
Mama won’t say a thing
Gaming now is officially healthy”

11. Dancing With Myself, Billy Idol

“So let’s sink another drink
Cause it’ll give me time to think
If I had the chance I’d ask the world to dance
And I’ll be dancin’ with myself”

12. Stayin’ Alive, Bee Gees

“Whether you’re a brother or whether you’re a mother
You’re stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive
Feel the city breakin’ and everybody shakin’
And we’re stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin’ alive”

13. All By Myself, Celine Dion

“Livin’ alone
I think of all the friends I’ve known
But when I dial the telephone
Nobody’s home
All by myself
Don’t wanna be
All by myself
Anymore”

14. Dance Alone, Blanks

“Been staring at the wall today
Still looking for some meaning
I tried talking to myself for a change
To ask me how I’m feeling
I’ve been running out of room to think
I need a higher ceiling”

And finally…

15. Don’t Touch Me, Elis Mraz

“Don’t touch my hair
Don’t touch my ass
Don’t touch my hand
Don’t touch my leg
Don’t touch me”

Honestly, there are so many heartbreaking songs that describe 2020 in its entirety. If we’re going to be stuck at home for the rest of the year too, it’s time we make an appropriate playlist, right?
