If you were introduced to the Internet in the last ten years, this article isn’t for you. It is for folks like us who were introduced to the world of social media with one angelic platform called Orkut. Founded by Orkut Büyükkökten, the social media platform came into our lives in 2004. It was owned and operated by Google but was shut down in September 2014. Orkut was our main source of fame and love, with the testimonials and scrapbooks and ‘who visited your profile’ updates.

On July 3, Twitter user Shubhangi Chopra led us back to the good old days by tweeting about it. Soon, it spread like wildfire and started trending. Here’s how the Twitterati expressed their love for the OG social networking site.

Employers writing a testimonial for an employee is a trend that still exists, while getting a testimonial on Orkut was a matter of pride.
Facebook came along and all of us gave Orkut a step motherly treatment. Those were the days☺️ #Orkut

Orkut definitely was the original social media platform that gave us more ways to use the Internet. For those who were in their early teens during the time, it was also a fun way to be online despite being warned against it by the elders. We could find out who from our class was checking out our profiles and who could be interested in us. The best of all were the public scraps — you could read any conversation on anyone’s profile.

Now, getting nostalgic about Orkut doesn’t imply disrespect for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and the likes. However, we just wonder what life would have been if we still had Orkut. Would Facebook still be as popular? Would Twitter enjoy the following that it has right now? Or, would Orkut lose its popularity and phase out on its own? What do you think?
