As a woman in India, when was the last time you sat in a cab without quietly praying that the ride ends safely? You constantly check the map, share live location with your loved ones, and even worse, keep an exit plan ready, just in case things go south. You are not alone, as that’s exactly what we, as women, are compelled to do. But sometimes, we hear stories that make us feel that not all hope is lost. Recently, a video went viral of a cab driver in Kolkata who drove a drunk woman home. Here’s what he did that stunned everyone.

As reported by India Today, a 31-year-old Kolkata cab driver named Munna Ajij Mollick dropped a drunk woman home safely. The viral video has struck a chord for all the right reasons. The clip, recorded during the ride, shows Mollick gently reassuring an intoxicated woman that he will take her home safely. Clearly anxious, the young woman asks him, “Uncle, I am so drunk. Can you help me?” To this, Mollick calmly replies, “I know you’re drunk beta… Don’t worry, I am here, I’ll take you to your home back safe.” The woman, fearing for her safety and her mother’s reaction to her being drunk, asks Mollick to not reveal this to her mom.
Calling her mother to update her about her whereabouts, the woman hands over the phone to Mollick. He speaks to her mother in Bengali to reassure her that her daughter is safe and that he’ll get her home. Jokingly, Mollick even calls the young woman a spoilt brat when she repeatedly asks him to not tell her mother that she’s drunk. When this conversation nearly left the internet in wonder, he said something that stuck with people.
Bare minimum, but still a big deal in India
When the young woman thanked him repeatedly, Mollick said, “It’s my duty, you don’t need to thank me… It’s my job, I took money for this.” The statement speaks volumes as Mollick proves that this should be the standard for any passenger, especially women taking cabs or any public transport.
Later, when a reporter from India Today interviewed Mollick, the cab driver reiterated, “That was a responsibility, to be honest, seeing what’s happening in our country.” The interviewer also asked him to share a message for other cab drivers or men in general. To this, Mollick said we all should be more careful and responsible. “If we do that, this society or this world might be a safer place for others,” Mollick said. His simple yet powerful statement stunned viewers and was widely appreciated. Here’s how people reacted to Mollick’s considerate behaviour.

Stories of women feeling unsafe have become the norm. Digital creator Star Girl reported her recent experience with cabs on Instagram. She said a cab driver harassed her when she asked him to lower the volume of the music. In a fit of rage, he changed the route and dropped her in the middle of a road. This is not the only case that reflects how unsafe women are in India. Several cases occur daily, which makes us think that women’s safety will always be a distant dream. But that’s when decent humans like Mollick remind us that safety shouldn’t be a stroke of luck. For everyone, including women in India, it should be a standard, unquestionable and non-negotiable.
