Joining the family business is tempting, especially if you’ve spent years hustling and struggling to make just enough money to rent a cupboard. But the freedom of your own cupboard, no matter how small, is far better than a spacious golden cage. That’s what I wish this bachcha had realised before she joined her husband’s “business”…and became a scammer without realising it.
Listen to her terrifying story here:

This bachcha now needs very complicated legal help, so I’m not even going to attempt advising her. What I can do, however, is tell you a few things to keep in mind if you’re thinking of joining your in-laws’ family business.
What will be your role?
Will you have any decision-making power or will you be the only intern in the office who is called ‘ma’am’? If you’re going to be just a naam ka director, then find a job outside the family business. Or start your own business.
Is this a good move for your career?
If this wasn’t your husband’s family business, would you have considered working here? Is this really a good shift for you or are you better off sticking to the industry you know? Joining the family business might seem like a good idea in the short run, but in the long run, it could be detrimental to your career especially if it’s a completely different industry. The years you put in the family business won’t count for much if you want to go back to what you did before shaadi.
How does the family business make money?
I mean, this is basic but in case some bachchas are too bhola to ask this question, here’s your reliable aunty telling you to stop being so trusting. Just ask. If they have nothing to hide, the answer should be crystal clear. But if you don’t understand despite repeated explanations, either look deeper into their records and save yourself…or accept that you don’t get it and shouldn’t work here.
Will you get paid?
Don’t just assume that you will get a salary. Negotiate like you would with any other employer. Because family business ke profits seedha aapke GPay mein nahi aayenge. If you’re not getting a salary, think about it long and hard. Will you be okay without a monthly pay check? Are you willing to bet that you, as an individual, will get a share in the profit if not a salary?
Check everything before you sign
Don’t start putting your name on everything just because you’ve been told. Take a cue from the story shared above. You can get screwed over very easily if you are not careful. They might call you beta, but if the cops come calling, you will be their bali ka bakra.
Be smart about joining the family business, beta ji. It doesn’t pay to be a gullible goose.
