As the blazing sun sucks out all our energy, there’s nothing that feels better than a cold, refreshing glass of coconut water. Even though it’s a summer favourite for hydration, coconut water isn’t always the saintly drink it’s assumed to be. In fact, having too much of it might do you more harm than good. So, if you’re wondering if coconut water is healthy to drink, here’s your answer.

Natural doesn’t mean harmless

is coconut water healthy

Coconut water comes loaded with potassium. A single cup can give you around 600 mg of it. That’s great if you’re low on electrolytes after sweating buckets, but not so great if your body can’t get rid of excess potassium efficiently. People with kidney issues should be especially cautious. Your kidneys are responsible for filtering out extra potassium. And studies suggest that drinking loads of coconut water can tip you into hyperkalaemia — a condition when you have too much potassium in the blood. And that’s not just a little bloating or discomfort; we’re talking about muscle weakness, irregular heartbeats, or worse, cardiac arrest.

Coconut water may interact with medicines

If you’re on medication, especially for high blood pressure or diabetes, you might want to check with your doctor before chugging coconut water every day. Its high potassium content can interact with blood pressure meds, causing your blood pressure to drop too low. Yes, even something as “natural” as coconut water can cause dizziness and light-headedness if mixed with the wrong meds. People on medication for heart conditions are also at risk of potassium build-up. Coconut water can also be risky for diabetics. Coconut water contains natural sugars, so it might affect your blood glucose levels more than you’d expect, particularly if you drink it daily and also take glucose-lowering meds.

Your gut might not be a fan of coconut water

Most people digest coconut water just fine, but if you’re prone to bloating or IBS, it might not be your best friend. Too much coconut water can cause diarrhoea or stomach cramps, especially if your digestive system is already sensitive. Some even report feeling gassy or uncomfortable after just a glass or two. If you’ve ever felt a little off after drinking coconut water, your gut might be telling you to slow down.

Avoid coconut water if you have low blood pressure

Coconut water is mildly hypotensive — it can help lower blood pressure. While that sounds like a plus for those with hypertension, it’s not ideal if your blood pressure is already low. Drinking excess coconut water could cause your blood pressure to dip too far, leaving you dizzy, fatigued, or even cause fainting on a hot day. Not exactly the wellness glow-up you were going for, right?

If you have kidney disease, take potassium-altering meds, have low blood pressure, are diabetic, or are prone to allergies, coconut water might not be for you. If you’re healthy and drinking a cup or two a day, chances are you’re just fine.
