Got some unwanted guests at your place? Well, no one loves unwanted guests, especially when they are rats and mice. The nasty little creatures can cause a lot of trouble and spread diseases. And while some of us have rat poison at home, most of us don’t store it because of pets or children in the house. But don’t worry, we know how to get rid of rats with some really easy home remedies that are just as effective. So if you have rodents in your home, try these remedies to throw them out.
1. Black pepper
Don’t we all love a little pinch of pepper to elevate the taste of our food? Well, the same little pinch of pepper is an excellent rat and mice repellent. Rats cannot stand the sharp smell of pepper and if they sniff it, they might end up dead. So, the next time you are using pepper, just sprinkle a bit at the entry points of your home and get rid of those pesky rats.
2. Peppermint oil
The fresh aroma of peppermint oil may be very pleasing to our senses, but it’s the opposite for rats and mice. Peppermint oil acts as a quick and easy repellent for rats. Just soak a few cotton balls in peppermint oil, and place them in the little nooks and corners of your house. Keep replacing them every one or two days, and make your home smell fresh and rodent free.
Well, this is one smell that not only repels mice and rats but humans too, so just bear with it. It is an excellent way to get rid of mice as they hate strong smells. And isn’t it better to use ammonia than cat litter anyway? Just dip a few cotton balls in ammonia, and keep them near rat holes and corners. You can even spray some of it every day in those small nooks and corners to get rid of them faster.
This is one of the easiest home remedies to get rid of rats. Since rats cannot stand strong and pungent smells, they run away from them. And what’s more pungent than onions? Cut a few slices of onions and place them all over your house to keep rats away. You can also spray onion juice around your house.
Just like onions, garlic too has a strong smell which repels rats. It is another easy home remedy that works like a charm. Cut up some garlic cloves and place them in the hard-to-reach corners of your home. You can also mix garlic and water, and create a liquid that you can spray around these points.
6. Plaster of Paris and cocoa powder
Cocoa powder is an inviting smell for rats just like us humans. But while you consume cocoa powder all by itself, just mix a little POP for the rodents. This will help you get rid of them as they will choke on dry POP and run for their lives. Mix a small amount of both, and sprinkle a generous amount of it around the entry points of your home.
7. Cloves or clove oil
Cloves, just like garlic and onion, have a strong smell that keeps rats away. They just can’t stand it. Sprinkle some cloves on the entry points of your house, or dip a few cotton balls in clove oil and place them around the house, changing them frequently.
8. Bay leaves
Bay leaves have a very pleasant aroma and they attract rats, making for the perfect trap. They think of bay leaves as food and try to feast on them. But bay leaves are actually toxic for rats and mice, and they end up choking and scooting. Put a few bay leaves in the small corners and entry points of your house to get your revenge on these pests.
